I use acrylic yarn and 0.25" dowels to make curly hair for my crocheted dolls, and the repeated soaking and baking they go through raises the grain on the dowels, snagging the yarn. These sponges are flexible enough to wrap around the narrow dowels but have enough body to them that I can use them easily.
