I collect chess sets, and own over 100 different sets. I also (try) to play chess at a club level, so I appreciate when things are playable for standard more official chess settings. I've played over 50 games with this board in blitz, rapid, and classical style formats. From this experience, here are my pro's and con's Pros: - Piece design: The piece design in superb. To put it simply, these are the best wooden chess pieces I've ever used in a magnetic chess set. It closely resembles that of the DGT timeless pieces which are the top of the line. Many other sets write "handmade wooden pieces" in their titles but end up just including a set of generic mass made cheap wooden sets, but this company does not. They feel great in the hands, look fantastic, and are very durable. The contrast between the pieces and the board is brilliant, and allows for very pleasant play. The wood grain is also NOT fake, which I am very happy with. They are real wooden pieces that do not have that glossy cheap look. - Magnets: The magnets are perfect for this size of board. They stay on at decently extreme angles, and during blitz play pieces rarely fall down. They also have a very satisfying sound when placing down on the board. - Board quality: Board is very smooth and level. I never really ever have issues with the seam and it has withstood several drops, hits, and literal smacking from small children. I have taken it abroad to two countries and it still plays great. Overtime mine has seen several scratches and nicks, but I've used this in a more extreme case. I actually like the "weathered" look it's taking on as well. - Value Given the quality of the board, pieces, and magnets, I don't think you can find a better deal. This is the highest value magnetic set I have found so far. Cons: - Putting pieces back: The magnets are not all the same direction. This causes pieces to snap to each other, or stick to the sides of other pieces. While this is not an issue when playing at all, it is annoying when putting it back after you're done. However this is really not a problem and adds maybe only an extra 10 seconds to your time when cleaning up. - Base size of Queen and King: These two pieces have slightly larger bases than the rest of the pieces. It doesn't impact playability but it irks me that they're not all the same size. I'm guessing this was to compensate for their taller height. - Size options: This size is fantastic for serious games, and works on many different surfaces. However for portability it is pretty sizeable and barely fits in my laptop backpack. The thickness also makes it cumbersome to carry around if you have a small bag. I wish there were maybe 3 sizes (small, medium, large) where this would be more on the medium size. Overall: This is my top pick for serious portable chess, and is my first recommendation anytime anyone asks. I really appreciate the quality they've put into this. Make sure you pay attention to the dimensions carefully and know that it will be slightly on the larger side. If that isn't an issue for you, you cannot find a better deal for the price! Review: Really liked this set. Good size and stable - Really nice set. Nice feel, nice wood grain, nice wood pieces looking handmade. Also stable. At least out of the box will check durability in time. ## Features - PATENTED DESIGN : The chine of a traditional folding board always inevitably bulges, which creates a huge gap on the board centre. A&A original mini bracket supports the board like a table leg, so the board is completely flat when played, and the mini bracket can also provide excellent protection for the table surface from the metal lock of the chess box. - EXCELLENT CHESS BOARD : The A&A chess set is made of walnut wood, smooth surface,15 inch board with 1.5 inch squares; the 0.5 inch thick frame with mortise and tenon joints makes the box sturdy; the chess board round corners bring comfortable visual and touch experience; the high-quality alloy metal lock ensures better durability for opening and closing; the chess box has spots to store all the pieces inside, no need to worry about losing chess pieces anymore. - STRONG MAGNETIC CHESS PIECES : The magnetic chess set comes with 2 extra queens, 34 pieces have the perfect amount of magnetism, it’s just enough magnetism to keep them in their place when moving the chess board around or in a moving vehicle, even on a bumpy road; all chess pieces are handmade of wood, unique and pretty exterior design with exquisite carving craftsmanship, and the felt on the bottom of the chess pieces are excellent for the protection of the board. - FOLDABLE AND PORTABLE : The chess board folded size is 15 x 7.5 x 2 inches, which makes it portable to carry, easy storage nice sturdy quality. - PERFECT GIFT : The A&A chess set craftsmanship and exterior design are great, and they are very meticulously packaged, layer upon layer of protective covers, the whole set is a work of art, perfect gift for travel, parties, outdoor activities, and game nights. In addition, we promise to provide you with a product warranty of up to 365 days, any problem about the product, please contact us and we will definitely solve them for you. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B0CB5SWL3K | | Best Sellers Rank | #21,371 in Toys & Games ( See Top 100 in Toys & Games ) #455 in Board Games (Toys & Games) | | Brand Name | A&A | | CPSIA Cautionary Statement | Choking Hazard - Small Parts | | Color | Natural Walnut | | Customer Package Type | Exquisite Packaging | | Customer Reviews | 4.6 out of 5 stars 3,978 Reviews | | Edition | Standard Edition | | Educational Objective | Enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills | | Genre | Strategy | | Included Components | 34 Chess Pieces Including 2 Extra Queens, Instructions, Wooden Chess Board | | Indoor Outdoor Usage | Indoor | | Item Dimensions | 14.96 x 14.96 x 0.04 inches | | Item Dimensions L x W | 14.96"L x 14.96"W | | Item Weight | 1.6 kg | | Language | English | | Manufacturer | Alex.H & Abel.C | | Manufacturer Part Number | 1008.380.03A | | Manufacturer recommended age | 14 years and up | | Material Type | Wood | | Minimum Age Recomendation | 36 | | Model Number | 1008.380.03A | | Number of Items | 1 | | Number of Packs | 1 | | Number of Players | 2 | | Operation Mode | Manual | | Rulebook Availability | No Rulebook | | Set Name | Chess set | | Size | 15 Inches | | Theme | Classical, Strategy | | Unit Count | 1 Count | ## Images ![A&A Premium Chess Board Game Set, 15" Wooden Chess Board & 3" King Height Unique Chess Pieces with 2 Extra Queens, Portable Travel Chess Set for Adults Kids (Natural Walnut, 15 Inches) - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81tnD7L9L+L.jpg) ![A&A Premium Chess Board Game Set, 15" Wooden Chess Board & 3" King Height Unique Chess Pieces with 2 Extra Queens, Portable Travel Chess Set for Adults Kids (Natural Walnut, 15 Inches) - Image 2](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71CihZpuS0L.jpg) ![A&A Premium Chess Board Game Set, 15" Wooden Chess Board & 3" King Height Unique Chess Pieces with 2 Extra Queens, Portable Travel Chess Set for Adults Kids (Natural Walnut, 15 Inches) - Image 3](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81n9333yU6L.jpg) ![A&A Premium Chess Board Game Set, 15" Wooden Chess Board & 3" King Height Unique Chess Pieces with 2 Extra Queens, Portable Travel Chess Set for Adults Kids (Natural Walnut, 15 Inches) - Image 4](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81tmuDzC12L.jpg) ![A&A Premium Chess Board Game Set, 15" Wooden Chess Board & 3" King Height Unique Chess Pieces with 2 Extra Queens, Portable Travel Chess Set for Adults Kids (Natural Walnut, 15 Inches) - Image 5](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/8126QWn6v1L.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Color, Size** options. ## Questions & Answers **Q: Is top smooth or can polyurethane be brushed on?** A: The top has a smooth finish, more like a playing surface, so the need for a poly coating is probably not necessary. **Q: Can I purchase just the flocking tray alone? Or does anyone know where I can find one?** A: You cant order it separately. It is built in the case **Q: Are the checkers pieces ridged and stackable?** A: Its a very nice set. I don't know what you mean by stackable. The are separately carved pieces. They do not stack on top of one another. The checkers will stack though. **Q: We bought this chess/checkers set a year ago and love it. We are missing one checker piece. How do I order a replacement piece?** A: Writ to the manufacture or ask Amazon. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The BEST Magnetic Travel Board for Serious Play *by O***L on June 11, 2024* I've owned this board for little over a year now, and it has been absolutely incredible. Nice feel, nice wood grain, nice wood pieces looking handmade. Also stable. At least out of the box will check durability in time. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice, but... *by C***G on January 15, 2024* I bought two sets of chess pieces from A&A at the same time, this one and one with a pasteboard storage case (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B8NRS8YB). The pieces are quite uniform between the two sets, as expected, and so meet my intended purpose. I have replacement pieces for every piece when one is inevitably lost or broken. I grew up seeing many games with small pieces such as pawns, a checker, dice, etc. replaced by something close. By buying two identical sets of pieces that will never be a problem. The pieces are quite as nice as expected, and perfect for recreational play. But after reading many reviews I thought I would check the dimensions... Well, the kings were slightly taller than 3 inches, but the base of the king was more like 1.2 inches rather than 1.4 inches. The pawns had bases that were more or less 0.8 inches, with only slight variations, but were only 1.4 inches tall rather than 1.5 inches. Not a big deal, really, unless you are trying to find replacement pieces to match your missing or broken piece later on, or are looking to buy this set to replace a piece in your set. Another thing I noticed was that every single piece had a oval base -- not dramatically oval, but enough to realize these either were not turned on a lathe, or were sanded unevenly. The case which came with this has a nice wood frame with panel sides which will form a playing surface if the case is opened and turned upside down. The panel looks to be a engineered wood product rather than wood, but is thin, light, and durable. I have no intention of using the case as a board, but will use a separate board (one piece) to play on. Inside is a flocked plastic tray with molded spots for each piece. Makes it quite easy to check that you have picked up and put away all 34 pieces, minimizing the chance of leaving a piece out to get lost. I only hope the plastic is heavy enough to be durable over many years. The wood case added twenty dollars to the cost over what I paid for the set with a pasteboard case, which is not a bad price when I priced other wood storage boxes for chess pieces. This case is quite nicely finished. Bottom line: it is an elegant set of chess pieces with a good case that will be a pleasure to play with for decades, but could be difficult to replace a piece some ten or twenty years from now. ## Frequently Bought Together - A&A Premium Natural Walnut Folding Chess Board Game Set, 15" Wooden Chess Board & 3" King Height Staunton Chess Pieces with 2 Extra Queens, Portable Travel Chess Set with Storage Bag for Adults & Kids - How to Win at Chess: The Ultimate Guide for Beginners and Beyond - LEAP Chess Clock Digital Chess Timer Advanced for Board Game and Chess Timer with Bonus & Delay Count Down up Alarm Black/Orange --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.gr/products/550270382-a-and-a-premium-chess-board-game-set-15-wooden](https://www.desertcart.gr/products/550270382-a-and-a-premium-chess-board-game-set-15-wooden) --- *Product available on Desertcart Greece* *Store origin: GR* *Last updated: 2026-10-08*
