To capture and keep its best moments, you need fast, high-capacity storage that accelerates every move. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD features up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds, letting you store your content and creations on a fast drive that fits seamlessly into your active lifestyle. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.) Review: Great upgrade!!! - I bought this drive to increase the storage available for my movies and TV shows on my media server. My 4TB drive was filling up. I admit that I felt forced to buy a Sandisk drive since I had previously bought drives from Crucial. But their decision to stop commercial sales forced me to try something new. I have to say, the drives are great. I only had one issue with the drive automatically ejecting from my Macbook when it was idle, but after a Google search I downloaded the Sandisk utility and updated the firmware of the drives and so far no further issues. The drives are small and quiet. The performance is great. I went with this model because I saw a review for the new model indicating that the new drive had failed after putting it under a sustained load. So far, no problems like that with this drive. Given the storage I needed and the performance I wanted these drives provided the value I was looking for. Review: Tiny, Fast, and Perfect for Travel - I can’t believe how small this SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD is! It’s incredibly compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry in a pocket or laptop bag without taking up any space. The data transfer speeds are excellent. Copying large files is quick, and it has been reliable for backing up photos, videos, and other important files. It’s a great portable drive if you need fast external storage on the go. The only downside is the price—it is definitely on the expensive side. That said, you’re paying for a combination of portability, speed, and a generous 2TB of storage. If those features are important to you, it’s a worthwhile investment. Easy to install, just plugin and start using it. I used for my PC laptop ## Features - Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.) - Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Nobody actually answered your question of "how much faster." Even though it's been over a year now, maybe it will help someone else. A typical portable HDD speed seems to be about 120 Mbps, whereas this drive claims 1,050 MBps read and 1,000 write. So about 8 or 9 times faster. Also, it is pretty fast relative to other portable SSDs. 1 GBps seems to be about the standard right now for drives in this price range. The T7 quotes the same speed, from what I can tell. Definitely not "3-4x" faster. The X5 quotes twice the speed (at twice the price). **Q: How to get the full 1000 mb/s? only getting about 800 mb/s write and 700 mb/s read. plugged directly into a macbook air m1 (2020). blackmagic test** A: The numbers quoted are for the raw data rate - how fast the drive can accept bits. You will never see this in real life. Some factors affecting real-world performance include: * File system overhead. Your file system (whether FAT, NTFS, HFS, APFS, ext or anything else) has overhead. This overhad consumes bandwidth, but you won't see it in a benchmark that only measures the data used by your files. * Your testing application may not be getting enough CPU cycles or USB bandwidth to be able to push data at the device's maximum speed. Testing labs use a computer with a specialized operating system that can ensure sufficient bandwidth, but an app running on a normal operating system can't make such a guarantee. **Q: It's not showing up on my ntfs for mac but is in finder. also keeps asking me to authenticate in order to do anything with it?** A: Ntsf is a windows format. A Mac will not write to it natively. You will need to get 3rd party software like Paragon or another to fully work with a ntsf formatted hard drive on a Mac. Format it to apfs if it is only going to be used on a Mac or buy ntfs for Mac software if you need to go back and forth. **Q: Can I use this as an additional storage *continuously* connected to my mac? any overuse or overheat issues?** A: Since my poor MacBook Pro 2016 has gotten slower because I refuse to update the OS (because I know what would happen), I started using my 2TB 1050mbps SSD Sandisc external drive for my heavy video editing and music production projects and it flies without any problem. I would say though that it is true that at some point it gets quite hot but nothing’s affected it’s performance. My advise is just connect it when you need it and that’s it. I love this little friend!! ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great upgrade!!! *by B***M on September 9, 2026* I bought this drive to increase the storage available for my movies and TV shows on my media server. Copying large files is quick, and it has been reliable for backing up photos, videos, and other important files. It’s a great portable drive if you need fast external storage on the go. I used for my PC laptop ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fast, tiny, and boring in the best way across Mac and Windows *by T***N on September 22, 2026* I’ve been using this SanDisk Extreme 2TB portable SSD as a grab-and-go drive across three machines: a MacBook, a Dell XPS, and a desktop. That’s the test that matters for me — not a single-computer cable drawer toy. It stays small enough that I actually carry it, and it’s plug-and-play in practice: connect it and it works. Speed has felt super fast for everyday moves between those machines, which matches what you want from this class of USB-C portable SSD (the Extreme line advertises very high sequential speeds and a ruggedized pocketable design with IP65 water/dust resistance and drop-oriented durability claims). I haven’t had reliability drama on either Mac or Windows. I don’t have a long list of complaints because there haven’t been meaningful ones in my use. If you need a compact 2TB drive that behaves the same on Apple and Windows PCs and doesn’t turn file moves into a waiting game, this is an easy recommend at five stars. ## Frequently Bought Together - SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD - Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, Sky Blue - External Solid State Drive - SDSSDE61-2T00-G25B - Hard Case Compatible with SanDisk 500GB/1TB/2TB/4TB Extreme Portable SSD - Up to 1050MB/s - USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2 - External Solid State Drive.
