There are other boards in this series that are bigger/smaller. What you need depends on your application. This is capable of being a decent retro game console emulator, and can spit out HDMI, at some decent resolutions. As with any FPGA, it is just fabric you can make into whatever you want, and that is going to dictate how much fabric you need. The Gowin IDE is very approachable. There are lots of simple examples. Out of curiosity I ordered a Primer-25k.
