The cable has connectors at both ends, so if you are seeing the wires, you must have cut the cable. If so, the copper wire is typically a shield, and the other two wires carry the hot (12V) and the Ground reference. To determine the hot wire plug the connector at the trigger source and measure the voltage with volt meter. Place read volt meter wire on one wire and black on the other. Observe the polarity of reading. If positive (+) then wire on the red is the hot. If negative (-) then wire on black is the hot and the other wire is the ground. In most application the shield can be left floating (not connected).
