Our stud finders sense density, and since metal is more dense than wood, the reading will tend to be more accurate on metal studs. Thank you for your inquiry. I might add that I have had many stud finders over the years and some more expensive than this one and this has been the best. **Q: Can this detect electrical wires?** A: No. This model does not detect electrical wiring. I don't think Franklin has a model for detecting electrical current. However it is the best I have found that can detect wall studs accurately. **Q: Does it work thru plaster/wood lathe?** A: I can only tell you that it worked through dry wall and It did recognize the wood studs around a door. And it worked exactly as described. I suspect that it will work through plaster, but I have no plaster in my house. I chose it because it looked more useful than some of the other products on the market. It is very easy to use, accurate, and specific enough that I can tell where the middle of a stud is when I am drilling holes. This model is really nice because it has more than just 3 lights - it has about 7, in fact. This means you can really get a really good sense for where the edges of a stud are quite easily, and also see when you are dealing with a post or double stud. This product is ideal for the home repair person who needs to do basic installation of things like shelves - ie. where you need to know where a stud is, and aren't concerned about finding wiring (there are other products by the same manufacturer that do that). I've put up a set of shelves, a fold out mirror, and a wall-mounted laundry rack using this stud finder, so far - all items that you really do NOT want to just use drywall to anchor.
