Blakelock's first chapter derivation of equations of motion for, "Longitudinal Dynamics" as he titles the chapter are an excellent resource. 6 degree-of-freedom (DOF) derivations and book keeping between body and earth frames can get cluttered and confused in many papers and incomplete texts. If there's a standard, this is it. Chapter 1 can help you make sense of many papers and other materials (including identifying errata in other materials). An automatic control engineering student will benefit from the case studies employing Bode and root locus plots: pencil-and-paper design experience. The case studies lend themselves to simulation using available tools like Matlab. A fun way for a student to absorb gyro mechanics would be to simulate Appendix J's A-1 gunsight description.
