I made a 2-inch refractor & an equatorial mount but found it very limited. Patrick Moore always recommended a refractor of at least 3-inches object glass for any sort of astronomical work & to shop around for something of this size as there are a lot of awful products on the market that try to make you buy with impressive-sounding magnifications completely beyond the power of the object glass to cope with (no more than x40 magnification per inch of object glass, hence approx.. x120 for a 3-inch). As a beginner don't try to go any bigger than a 3-inch. Celestron are a fairly good manufacturer & their 70mm or 90mm object glass telescopes are likely to be quite satisfactory. A large reflector has some alignment problems & the mirror will need resurfacing from time to time - not really something a sometime amateur will want to deal with, so I would always opt for a refractor. **Q: Hi. what is the difference between the astromaster 70 az and the 70s az lt** A: I am so sorry, I don't know the answer to your question, but when I was researching I found that the local Observatory were very happy to speak with me and give me advice. Not bad at all *by L***E on 10 July 2017* Great starter telescope arrived a few days and already been able to see the north star and the moon. Not had any luck with planets but i guess thats with the coverage outside. Only downside is mine came with a different star pointer than the one shown in the images. I am unable to get this star pointer to fit as the mount is not correct and i have contacted amazon who said they are unable to supply or replace the pointer. I was how ever offered a full refund and they can send a new telescope with the correct pointer or get 25% back so i did this and will just use some mounting tape to get the pointer to fit.
