This is a brand new 16-ton hydraulic crimper by Chromex Tools. It comes with 12 pairs of dies when most competitors provide 11 pairs. The hydraulic crimper is much easier and efficient to use than a pair of hand crimpers. With it, you can crimp wires and butt connectors on a wide range of wire sizes. What does it mean when you crimp wires or butt connectors? The word crimping means to join two pieces of metal together by damaging one or both of them to hold the other. The damage is called the crimp. In order to crimp connectors onto a wire, a special tool is required which is called a hydraulic crimper. The crimper tool crimps AWG 6 to 600 MCM copper and aluminum wires using 12 pairs of chrome-plated steel crimping dies. Great for power wires, electrical cables, battery cables and welding cables. Review: First looks and thoughts. (Update posted) - This review is very preliminary since I just received the crimping tool yesterday. The tool comes as pictured but with 12 dies and a packet of seals and "O"-rings. Unfortunately it does not have a operation manual with schematic plus parts list if the time comes to replace the seals. It is a heavy duty looking setup and quite a value if it is reliable. Time will tell. I like the large collection of die sizes from 10mm to 300mm. Though it would be nice to have offered additional die sets with different crimp designs and possibly a shear die for purchase. I plan to use the crimper on aluminum wire rope ferrules initially and the hexagonal stock dies are not the best design for that. I know the unit is marketed as use in battery wire and electrical terminal crimping but the hydraulic ram does not care what use you put it too. Therein is why I would like to see add on die kits. Even a few smaller hex dies like the 8mm and 6mm that other kits have would be nifty. Update. Have now used the crimper on 3/8" ferrules for 3/8" wire rope. One end with a hook, the other just a eye. I used the 185mm die and it seems to be good. After crimping twice per ferrule (8 crimps in total). I experienced no bad issues with the device. Can not say how much strength the cable will support, since bit hard to test properly, but for simple usage I expect it will be adequate. All in all great deal.
Review: Used for 4/0 crimps thru 4 awg with no problem. - This crimper is just what I was looking for. Well made, very sturdy, makes hexagonal crimps. Much better looking than hitting them with a hammer. The dies, and there are a lot, are in mm's, but easy to tell which work for domestic sizes. I just use a marker for quick identification next time. Replacement seals, even gloves, good deal! Works very good for me.

Like all the bargain-basement-priced crimpers, the dies are metric with wide gaps between sizes, which may not fit the larger U.S. size lugs very well. Having said that, decent crimps can be made if some some care is taken, and this unit appears to work properly in all respects, with no other functional issues. Hugely powerful. Good for DIYers.
