The lens should have come with a cap. This is a great hood. Once it's placed on the lens, it can just stay there because you just lightly push it out when needed and then just pull back on it to retract over the lens. **Q: Can the hood be extended (at least partially) while using the stf-8 macro flash? does the hood rest in position if only partially extended? thank you.** A: I'm not familiar with the stf-8 flash but the lens hood can be used in any position, it will stay put. If you don't want it when you are trying to get as much light on the subject as possible and may need manual focus it is trivial to remove. A lot of lenses I have owned in the past had sliding retractable lens hoods and it certainly made life easier.
