## Description

'I could have done with a copy of Ad Astra in December 2015!' – Tim Peake
‘A wonderful, wise and witty guide for space explorers everywhere.' – Richard Osman
‘A must read both for intrepid space explorers and misty-eyed dreamers. Now, to space!’ – Hannah Fry
‘Few people are more knowledgeable, celebratory and witty about space travel than Dallas Campbell.’ – Adam Rutherford
Need some space? For almost all human history we’ve been firmly rooted to the Earth. And, sure, it's got some good things going for it: nice views, friendly inhabitants, good coffee. Air. But what if you want to get off? Whether you've got itchy feet and need a bit of a break, or you’re looking for a complete change of scene, this book has all the information you'll need to leave, with FREE expert advice from the men and woman who can actually make it happen. Do I need a passport? How do I know if I have the right stuff? Can I take my dog? What space
suit do I need? Where am I going to go? What am I going to eat? As well as being a deeply impractical guide to getting off the planet, this is an eclectic and beautifully illustrated mix-tape of space travel stories – both real and imagined. From the migrating lunar geese that flew us to the moon in the 1600’s, to Elon Musk’s wild plan to get humans to Mars en masse in the future; from the history of early rocket science to the Soviet tortoises that secretly won the space race. A collection for anyone who has looked up in wonder at the stars... And then wondered how to get there.
‘The next best thing to actually heading off into space.’ – Jim Al-Khalili
‘Few people are more knowledgeable, celebratory and witty about space travel than Dallas Campbell.’ – Adam Rutherford
‘If, like me, you dream of going into space, this is definitely the place to start the journey.’ – Dan Snow
‘A must have volume for astronauts and armchair astronauts alike.’ – Helen Sharman OBE
‘Funny, factual and beautiful.’ – Shaun Keavney
‘Read it, make notes, and be ready when the day comes.’ – Helen Czerski

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A wonderful book beautifully written and illustrated capturing the story of the people behind humanity's greatest endeavour
*by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 30 October 2017*

A superbly written book, overflowing with wit and insight into humanity's journey into space. I've been fascinated about space since my parents took me to Jodrell Bank in July 1969 to watch live transmissions of man landing on the moon. There are stories in this book I'd never heard of, amazing facts and brilliant photographs. The book is formatted in short sections, ideal for reading on the train or on the launchpad. Dallas has conducted painstaking research, listened to the people that made things happen, found the forgotten heroes, described the tragedies, the risks and the triumphs. The book is a joy to read with a sense of immediacy and engagement that makes the adventure sparkle. Even if you only have a casual interest in the subject this is an engaging and captivating read. If like me, you think mankind's future is ultimately off-world, you'll love this fine work that describes the history and the future of space travel.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great gift for anyone not just a lover of space travel!
*by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 25 February 2018*

A cornucopia for the lover of that mysterious space out there.Jam packed with cool artwork, photos, intriguing stories and awesome facts such as why there is the” palm-sized solid aluminium stylised figure of an astronaut “ that lies in lunar soil next to a “plaque bearing the names of fourteen men who had lost their lives in the pursuit of space travel.”Always one for a good book and not a fan of reading from a screen ,as I like to get my hands around something solid ,this was perfect for me.Being the perfect size to pop in my bag when I’m on the go it’s great to delve into it wherever and whenever enabling reading different parts as and when.It is a truly fascinating, witty, respectful and accessible read.A great gift for anyone.Highly recommended.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent book about space travel and its history. A lovely book for a gift.
*by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 19 November 2017*

A beautiful book full of interesting stories and facts about space travel, space history, and being in space. It's perfect to dip into and find an interesting page to read. I would recommend this for anyone who is interested in space, or who likes great historical stories. The pictures in Ad Astra are really one of the best parts of it too. There are some retro-futuristic gems amongst them. There's also songs, recipes, spacesuits on washing lines, astronauts, physics... and it's the perfect size to carry around with you, so you can get a space fix where ever you are. It's varied, and detailed, and is lovely to read. I will be buying more for Christmas presents! But first I'm just going to see if I can round up a flock of lunar geese to start my own space travel adventure.
