It is also not as soft as playdoh but it's nice if you want to make ornaments to last.I would say with parental supervision it would be ok for a 5 year old. **Q: Does it work for making butter slime?** A: if your planning to use this i am not sure but daiso clay works it makes a brilliant result but dont add to much or it will get hard **Q: Does this cause any problems with fumes etc in a household oven. Does the oven need special cleaning afterwards?** A: Although I have bought Fimo Clay I have not used it yet. I found 2 stands at a Craft Exhibition. One being the International Association of Polymer Clay Modellers, and one demonstrating modelling using Fimo. I had particular modelling in mind and was referred to a book by Angie Scarr, which I am planning to use. I have found two sentences that relates to your question. First: - "If your clay starts to smell, change colour dramatically or becomes shiny, the oven is too hot." Second: - "If you accidentally over-bake the materials, turn off the oven, open the door, and leave the kitchen as quickly as possible. Leave doors and windows open. Do not return until the fumes are completely dispersed. If you are exposed to fumes seek immediate medical attention. Once cooled, clean the oven and discard any food left out in the kitchen". Hope this helps. **Q: Can anyone tell me how this compares to Sculpey....and please, don't bother to reply if you've not used both products, thank you.** A: Sculpey's easier to work to softness than FIMO typically is, regardless of type (premo, III, doll making clay, etc.), if that helps any. Both harden with the same times and temperatures (neither are fussy that I've seen) and it's taken some serious wear on either to see cracks.
