Review: beeping on arrival - replacement fine, review updated - I know this is a NAS drive, but I wanted to use it on desktop with heavy hdd usage (video editing). Unfortunately the drive arrived dead, kept beeping upon booting and couldn't be recognised. Have just returned it to desertcart third party supplier. Installation was tricky on Zalman Z3 plus case. I managed to find spare hard disk support rails from 3 years back. But left one didn't fit the hdd as this doesn't have 3 standard holes like other drives. It only has two holes at the ends, which makes it difficult to properly install & support in the hdd cage. I somehow managed to install it, but didn't work as it was never recognized and kept beeping. Changed power connectors & sata cables that were working with other seagate drive (barracuda). Am now looking for a replacement. Update: 7.May.2019: I was searching for a decent alternative and couldn't find one. So decided to order the same hdd from desertcart directly, by selecting the packaged option which was expensive compared to the OEM option. But I think that was worth it. desertcart sent it nicely packaged, and this time the installation went absolutely fine. HDD was recognised without an issue, and no beeping :). It has been working fine for over a couple of months now. No complaints. It is in the machine which is in our bedroom. If I leave the desktop switched on during night, odd read/write is audible. But not loud enough to cause trouble. Read/write speed is adequate for my video editing. I just need to set up a back-up with similar capacity drive so that I don't accidentally lose my content. Perhaps will buy another one & set it up as a mirror.
Review: High Capacity Speedy Drives - Excellent drives sustained writes of around 214 Mb/s I bought 4 of these drives to replace 4 4 Tb drives the data transfer was held up by the far slower 4 Tb WD RED 5200 RPM drives all had at least 3 TB transferred across in a single sitting. They did get hot so I would recommend a drive bay cooling fan but seem fast and reliable. I would recommend these above Barracuda 5200 RPM drives but I can't say weather the Barracuda Pro Drives are better as I have not tried them. Overall good purchase so far but as with all Hard Drives Time will tell as RELIABILITY over time is key especially on large HDD's

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can this be used with a regular pc?**
A: Actually, it's probably not a particularly good idea to use a 'NAS' drive in a desktop computer, unless it's part of a 'RAID array'.

The 'firmware' on drives like these is specially modified for this type of environment. The most salient of these modifications is what's called TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery) - In the event that one of these drives has trouble reading the data stored on one of its platters, it will simply give up trying and resume its normal duties!

This might sound like odd behaviour, and you certainly wouldn't want this in your 'desktop' computer(!), but in a NAS or RAID environment though, it makes perfect sense. One of the other drives would have already returned the data that it's having trouble reading. Also, f it takes too long to respond, the controller would 'drop' the disk from the array causing your whole array to be in a worse condition that it was to start with.

Hopefully that all makes sense and will save some unfortunate people from issues by using the wrong type of drives!

**Q: What transfer speeds are you getting with this drive? In megabytes**
A: I've got 5 x 4TB ST4000VN000 running off a MegaRAID 9261 hardware raid controller and done a lot of testing with and without the controller and in various RAID configurations. They are OK for home use but in environments you are going to have a lot of writes there performance drops off massively compared to say something like a barracuda. Most home users are going to storing large media files and streaming them to multiple devices over network and its absolutely fine for that and will saturate network before you run out of disk performance. But if you are saying trying to run a database app off one then look elsewhere.

**Q: Can anyone confirm for sure that these are fine with a Synology DS718+?**
A: They've been fine with my Synology DS918+

**Q: Is it compatible with apple time capsule**
A: Once reformatted to a mac standard itll be fine to use for time capsule

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Seagate 8 TB IronWolf 3.5 Inch 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive from Box Ltd
*by R***R on 6 July 2019*

I ordered the Seagate 8 TB IronWolf 3.5 Inch 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive from Box Ltd. The parcel arrived well packaged in a well protected in a tough plastic air bubble wrapper designed for hard drives, not standard bubble wrap. The drive took standard sata cables and is running on a old desktop 2nd gen i5 processor, which I will be using as a storage server (my cheap 'on demand' NAS), but the drive does look a bit thicker than my other drives, but it is 8Tb. The drive is fast (7200 prm) and quite and is working well; but this is just 2nd day of use. My only gripe is the courier delivered the parcel to the wrong address, but I was given information to track down the parcel from Box Ltd.
