You can approach it in two ways, just read it or do the practical assignments and to do the latter you will have to purchase some materials and equipment. The author provides a list of manufacturers of gouache paint with specific paints to buy to ensure consistency, as well as paper, card, brushes, glue etc, so be warned there is additional things to buy if you want to do the assignments It starts off nice and basic to ease you in, and you are not expected to have any previous experience in the arts or drawing. The assignments use a collage format to help you produce your work and build your skills. Some of the work had me struggling a bit, but I found that it helped if I copied the examples first, then produced my own ones with lots of different attempts to get a good result, plus plenty of analysis on why they work or don't I'm about half way through the book now, and I'm already feeling a lot more more comfortable using and mixing colour, plus understanding the relationship between hue, value and saturation, and how to manipulate them to get the effect that I want I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone who does any type of art Review: It's all about hue, value and saturation - This book gives you a great understanding of Colour and how to use it. The only thing I didn't understand is why the exercises used gouache paint; acrylic would have been easier. I really think about colour more than I had before and it has helped with my paintings. I would recommend this book for anyone that wants to get a better understanding of the different effects colour combinations have on the eye.
