We used to get 2 or three years out of the crushers (we use a lot of cans). The last one I got about 12 years out of but that was by doing some running repairs. Like when the rivets wore away on the handle I replaced it with a long bolt, three nuts and slipped the foam over it. Worked a treat. Eventually though the bottom gave way and the only way to fix it was to weld or braze it. Too much effort for a £15 item. Time to replace it. I saw countless ones almost exactly the same as my old one but as my only one was the same price as this Heavy Duty one I thought I'd give it a go.I've waited a few weeks before reviewing it. As a family we get use about 30 drinks cans, 14 dog food cans and maybe 8-12 food cans per week. So i've easily crished over 150 cans so far. It feels a lot more solid than my old one. The handle is longer but not so long as it gets in the way. The extra length certainly helps. Some drink cans seems like I'm not putting any pressure on at all. The lips on the crushing surfaces seem to work well. I've not had a single can pop out. That didn't happen often but I would have otherwise of expected it to happen 3 or 4 times atleast. The thing for me was how well it would crush food cans. Previously I had been stamping them flat on the floor. Not Ideal, it took two spamps per can and it was begining to mark the kitchen floor. Plus I'm not getting any younger and bending to pick them up is getting harder. I am please to say that it does crush them quite well, but with some reservation. The instructions say you should put the can in side ways first and dent the sides before putting it back in vertically and crushing them fully. That didn't work for me. When the sides are dented the can folds down when crushed. This didn't give enough of a dent to start it off. If you do it as it says and put the base of the can in, the base stops the jaws from closing and you only get a dent the sise of the lips. If you put the open end in it closes the opening. This makes a shape a bit like a pyramid which is almost as hard to crush as the orginal cyninder shape. I now push the sides of the can in with my hands (Two thumbs together makes it quite easy). I do this on either side of the can and it then crushes quite well. It still needs 3 or 4 times as much force to crush it as a drinks can but the long handle comes in to it's own here. It probably would work if it was any shorter. With all this said I can't say strongly enough that this needs to be Very securely fixed to the wall. Mine is screwed in to brick and I've used longer 50mm screws to be sure.In summary, It does what it claims. It is noticeably heavier duty than others on the market and will crush food cans. (Crushes all other copies!) *by S***T on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 September 2015* The Heavy Duty wall mounted Can Crusher for tins... by ThinkRecycling was chosen because it was sturdy sounding and because of its crushing job I knew it would be best to get a middle of the range version in case the cheaper ones didn't last long. This is why I am pleased I did:^^ It was easy to dix to the wall, I don't have a garage, and I wasn't sure I wanted it outside since it would be a pain to walk to when all my recycling is done in the kitchen, so I opted to fix this into the kitchen where is is so much handier to reach.^^ This gets used daily. Dog food cans need squashing one end first, and then stoos up and crshed a second time to flatten them further as they are tougher cans to squash. This is easily done with ThinkRecycling's heavy duty wall mounted crusher, which pleases me since we go through a lot of cans.^^ This also crushes aliminum cans with ease and it's quite fun, too.Overall:I am extremely happy with this and can easily recommend. It's nice to do my recycling part and this saves so much space in my blue (cardboard and tin) recycling bin. Another reason I am so happy with this as it is just what I wanted it for. Now I can pack in more in my bins and recycle more, especially good as they do not empty the bins on a weekly basis anymore. It does exactly what it says it does. Easily crushes drinks cans, but I bought this primarily for tin cans. I go through a lot of cat food and the tins fill my recycling bin and clutter my kitchen bench. This product enables me to fit much more in my recycling bin and means my kitchen bench is clear. The cat food cans do need to be pressed together a little at the top before placing in the crusher to give it a starting point, but with a bit of effort a tin can is crushed to 20% of its original size! You do need a little bit of muscle, and weaker people may need to use two hands, but the crusher is very effective. Coke cans are a breeze! I would completely recommend this product to people who would like to save space, are conscious about recycling and need to vent their anger on something!! I especially like the soft handle which is very comfortable to use. Fantastic product!As an aside, screws for mounting the product are provided, however I ended up using my own screws as I was drilling into masonry to mount it and required rawl plugs.
