I have stone down atm was going to put sand over the top then grass just need some advice** A: If by prepare you mean flatten the surface; then yes, it does the job. Good robust tool, I used it to flatten hardcore before laying slabs, did the job well. Recommend it. **Q: Would this be okay for compacting sub base** A: The weak point is at the base of the handle, as I found out when the tamper was used on some uneven ground with some large flints. However some duct tape came to the rescue.
