They had you use an included allen wrench for most of the screws. These shelves did not work as well for my plants as I anticipated because many of my plants and/or pots were too big to fit on this. That is an error on my part for not measuring things to go on it before purchase. I did come up with enough plants to fit and it looks nice. The top shelf is not exactly level but good enough to still hold a plant safely.
