I don't know if they are good for cutting fresh threads on plain steel simply because I have not tried so far. My only complaints are that the dies do not snap into their holders very well and some of them drop out as you open the case. The other issue is the adapter that goes from the super large dies to the smaller dies. This is a bit awkward to use. But I have another die wrench that fits the smaller dies.
