## Description

Chicory, also known as blue dandelion and ragged sailors, is a wayside herb that is native to Europe and now naturalized in North America. For centuries, its long taproot has been harvested to make a hot beverage, especially during times when coffee beans were scarce.

Review: Delicious great value - This chicory is delicious. A little bit goes very far. And it is a perfect compliment to my coffee.
Review: Delicious... - Being hypersensitive to caffeine even with decaf coffee I was desparate for a coffee substitute that actually resembled coffee. Having a warm cup of coffee with a little sugar and non dairy creamer in the morning is a comfort food that helps ease me into the day. I read about chickory, and remembered my father used to drink a brand of coffee that was blended with chicory when i was growing up. So I gave this a try and I must say it very closely resembles coffee in every way. I make this by the cup full since I only have one cup per day. I use a coffee filter and put a tsp. of chickory in it then fold it in a way to keep it from leaking out. Then I staple it closed. Drop the pouch in a microwave safe cup and let it cook for 1-2 minutes depending on your microwave power level. I sometimes add a dandelion root teabag to my cup as wel for extra benefit and flavor.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Would this work well with a cofee french press?**
A: I think it would work fine.....it work fine in the coffee maker you just don't use as much Chicory. I use only about two tablespoons of the Chicory and do the whole pot in the coffee maker. About a third as much chicory as I use coffee. You will have to experiment yourself on how much to use in the french press just remember the chicory is stronger.

**Q: is the information correct that one pound only makes 3 to 3 1/2 cups?**
A: Hello. There are 3-3.5 cups of chicory root in a one pound bag. To make a cup to drink you need approximately 1-2 tablespoons of chicory root (depending on the taste you desire). Thank you.

**Q: You can't just stir this in hot water like instant coffee?**
A: No you can't. This is not instant granules, it is like a course coffee. I make it with my Keurig.

**Q: Will this work in a k-cup machine with a reuseable filter?**
A: I don’t know what a k-cup machine is. I use about a teaspoon of chicory in a tea ball (a small sphere of screen-like ball for brewing loose tea) and pour boiling water over it inside a cup, stir and dunk it up and down a few times, and remove it from the cup. The tea ball is a “reusable filter.” The chicory does not melt. The hot water extracts the flavor out of the granules, just like coffee grounds. Try it in your k-cup machine. Experiment. Enjoy.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent substitute for strong coffee minus the caffeine.
*by S***T on 8 April 2017*

I love coffee but it was taking its toll on my gut. I could take or leave the caffeine and have always loved chicory blends. When I learned you could brew chicory by itself (duh) I decided to try it. I have not compared to other brands, but this one is great. I think it tastes basically the same. Satisfies me like a good ole cup o joe minus the bathroom dash afterwards. Mixes with my favorite rotations of cream and cream-like ingredients and various sweeteners. Chicory is naturally bitter compared to some coffee, so if you are a weak coffee drinker it's not likely the best sub for you. That being said you can, just like coffee, experiment with the brew strength of this. I keep trying less chicory with each pot and have yet to make it too weak so the stuff seems pretty potent. Last attempt was half a pot - 6 cups water - brewed with 3T of this grind in my $25 plain ole coffee pot. Delicious!
