Review: Nice Little Board - Check the Size to See if it works for you but it did for me. - This is a really, really nice little compact and quality cutting board. I wanted something for slicing bagels, slicing lemons and limes, cutting garlic cloves in half, cutting off a piece of cheddar from the block, and similar small tasks without having to drag out my massive 36 x 36 teak board. This is exactly that. It is too small to really "chop" on - although in a pinch you can chop a little parsley or other herbs. So no - this isn't a kitchen workhorse. But it is just what I needed and wanted.
Review: One year and I love it! - i waited a year to write this review because there were so many people complaining of splits and cracks. I have ha no problems and am quite happy with my board. I have kept it dry and haven't exposed it to extreme temperatures. I have used it daily, cleaning immediately and treating it with Mystery Oil when dry. I condition it regularly, I'm not sure I'd need to oil or condition except for sanitary reasons. The board is quite solid and well-made. Two things to consider with a solid wood product splitting: 1) Where does the split occur? 2) How was the product stored and handled? A split along a seam is manufacture. A split in a piece of wood could be material selection, but is more likely care. That includes the care given during transportation and storage between the manufacturer and your kitchen. A board that has been stored in a humid environment or allowed to get wet may not recover well, or quickly. Buy from a reputable seller. Check packaging for signs of moisture or stress. Allow the board time to acclimate before oiling and using, if it's been transported from a different climate. Be careful about using the board near a range top, where heat can stress the wood if it's wet. I love my board, will continue to care for it, and expect to see many more years of use from it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I see references to "wax" in the reviews. Can anyone give me the actual name of the product? (NOTE: I already have the "Mystery Oil" in my cart.)**
A: The actual name of the product is Boos Block Board Cream. It is marketed on the tube as, "Natural Moisturizer for All Types of Wood". The listed ingredients are Natural Unbleached Bee's Wax and Food Grade Mineral Oil. I use the product roughly once a week to moisturize the wood after first wiping the board down with a water soaked cloth. The entire board requires roughly one teaspoon of product on a cloth to moisturize the entire surface.

**Q: Our board has a very strong, strange smell, does anyone know what causes this and if it will go away? It kind of smells like burnt rubber.**
A: Hello Ms Wenzel,

Well, we have to say you stumped us on this one! This board is made from Maple Wood with an all- natural oil finish. Have you owned the board for awhile? Did you purchase it from Amazon or from a third party seller here on Amazon? Have you used other oil products on it? We do know that when people use food based oils (coconut, olive oil- both not recommended), they could potentially go rancid, which would lead to an unpleasant smell. If that perhaps is the case, we recommend the following: Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water or rinse with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher. Use John Boos Mystery oil (sold here on Amazon) to moisturize and protect the board when it is dry. Repeat oil every month, or more often if the board is new or you live in a dry climate. These quick steps will ensure this board is a constant companion for years to come!

Please do write us back if you have further questions. We are curious to hear about a resolution!

Sincerely,
John Boos and Co

**Q: Ate your boards formaldehyde free?**
A: Hello,

Boos Boards and Blocks are formaldehyde free

Thanks,
John Boos and Co

**Q: Should this board feel unfinished and really scratchy? I have a different size in the same series and that one is totally smooth. Counterfeit?**
A: Mine came in nice condition. It feels like it’s a little dusty but is not. Some have sanded a board.. If so do NOT use steel wool which can leave fine filament behind. Also do not use water on the board before sealing with mineral oil or Boos cream, etc. It will raise the grain. I have a 12x12 and handle board that are nearly 50 years old. Side note, don’t use serrated knives on maple boards. And I cut meats and never had a health issue. Research will answer a lot of concerns like flattening a warped board. Hope this helped and good luck.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent board
*by E***T on March 29, 2026*

We love this board. It is solid, flat, thick, cleans easily, and there are no microplastics to deal with. It is big enough to do a lot of chopping on without getting crowded. I don't see a piece of wood this thick ever warping unless you do something crazy like stick it in a dishwasher. (Don't!) The board is also attractive enough that we just leave it out on the counter full time now. I am doing a lot of wok cooking these days, and a good board is essential in vegetable preparation. We do not (and will not) use this one for meat, but it's the go-to for anything else.
