## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can this be used with integraded stereo amp? specifically cambridge cxa80**
A: The best way to use with an integrated would be if there is some sort of in/out loop so that the tube buffer would be applied to all of the sources. Receivers back in the day had tape monitor loops, and this tube buffer would have done nicely in that set-up. Pre-out/pre-in may also work, but I am not sure how well it would function at variable levels of gain that would be created by the pre-amp. It may work fine, but I would check with iFi if you have that capability. Instead, I run this between my BlueSound Node 2 and my Simaudio integrated, and I think it sounds fantastic. I don't get the benefit of the tube bufffer on all the sources, but I listen through my BlueSound 90% of the time.

**Q: When this is off and in buffer setting, do the output rca connections still pass audio from the input connections?**
A: No, no audio signal is passed when the unit is off. And when it is switched on, it is silent for the first 40-45 seconds until it warms up.

**Q: ifi: Is it recommendable for the iTube2 to be place in-line between a preamp and a power amp, or should it always go before the preamp?**
A: We recommend using it as a buffer between the preamp and the power amp, though you could also use it before the preamp.

**Q: Will the gain control take the unit down to zero gain in all three tube modes? Does the unit run at unity gain with gain control at maximum?**
A: This was my review for the item. Happy hunting :)

"I bought it originally to serve as a phono preamp. I have a beautiful Project Turntable, Yamaha Cassette Player and bluetooth. I bought this to bring some tube creaminess to the sound.

First of all, I did leave the preamp on for over 100 hours to allow it to break in over 1 week before connecting anything to it.

The first thing you notice when you plug it in is the NOISE. bzzzzzzzz. Now while you do expect some buzz due to the nature of it being a tube amp, the noise doesn't disappear when you're playing a track, which is what you expect out of a tube amp. It's there no matter what.. I can hear it over the Beatles Abbey Road up tempo tunes. On the softer stuff like "Sun King", the buzz is all the more prominent because of the song's softer dynamics.

I hit all the switches and all combinations possible and none of them make my turntable sound better than it does without it. I changed the mode to passive preamp to preamp with volume control and that minimized the buzz a little bit... but not enough to not be noticeable when you're actually listening to a track.

Fine.. so no tube magic from the phono stage. Frustrated, I tried to apply it to the cassette player, to see if I might get any magic out of that.

Zero. Nothing. Without question, my tape player and my TT sound better without it.

I know what tubes sound like and I know the effect they're supposed to create on recorded tracks.. you get none of that out of this product. With all the hype you'd think the thing was the second coming.. but truthfully, it has added absolutely zero to my listening experience.. except a whole lot of NOISE. $379 for NOISE is a RIP OFF. DON'T BUY THIS THING"

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Gigantic Improvement - Mind Blown
*by P***E on March 7, 2020*

The iTube2 is an amazing piece of gear.I run it in the loop of a Peachtree Nova 300, through a pair of 4 ohm Tekton Pendragons. I use it in tube buffer mode w 9dB gain.It came in the mail yesterday. I plugged it in last night and was utterly unimpressed. In A/B comparison, it seemed to do absolutely nothing.I left it on all night. I woke up today wondering if I could get a refund. Then I tried it again and was absolutely knocked out by the improvement in soundstage, punch, immediacy, mids and highs clarity & overall awesomeness.Peachtree’s tech advisor Christian recommended the iTube 2 a year ago and I didn’t believe my Nova300 could sound $400 better. I was wrong. The Peachtree Nova300 is a class D amp and already has a fat, tube-esque sound. But the ITube 2 just opens it up.I do not have the vocabulary to do justice to how good this sounds in my system. I don’t know if it’ll do the same for you, but check out Zero Fidelity’s review of it. He definitely DOES have the vocabulary he’s got my vote for the Noam Chomsky of audio. Zero Fi has an association w ifi, but his review is even handed. He said he tested the iTube 2 on a rig costing $200,000 and it made that system sound better.I’ve spent an entire Saturday rediscovering my music collection with the iTube 2.CONS: In the high gain configuration, at high volumes, with bass-heavy songs, I sometimes get loud, annoying pops from my speakers. It may be that I’m bumping up on the limits of my speakers. Knowing how Tekton builds speakers I kind of doubt it, but we will see. Other people powered their ITube 2 for 100 hours before using it. Maybe on Monday it will be gone. This problem only occurs over 90dB.If it works half as well for you as it did for me, you’re going to lose your damned mind. Good luck! I wish you well.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A "Swiss Knife" for Audiophiles
*by Z***0 on March 11, 2020*

This thing is a "Swiss Knife" for modifying your sound, with multiple features at the ready.I rode the controls obcessively early on, but now, I know exactly what I want as soon as a track starts playing. Here's hoping those toggle switches can take the punishment.---I use "SET" when I want to take the edge off of bright tracks (or bright headphones) - or whenever I intend to enjoy a long, fatigue-free listening session. :)I use "Classic" when I want maxiumum detail and transparency, yet still retaining a good measure of analog tubeliciousness - this is definitely not a "bypass." I probably spend more time here, than on the other two settings.I use the "Push-Pull" setting when I want to add warmth, dynamics and texture to an otherwise lifeless recording, but this is my least used setting of the three choices.---None of my headpones (or loudspeakers) sound good with the 12dB setting of the XBass feature, but some tracks/transducers really do sound better with the 6dB boost. It somehow manages to maintain the texture and pitch discernment that was there before engaging it, boosting bass energy transparently. I almost wish I had a choice of 3dB and 6dB, instead of 6dB and 12dB, but as a guy who dislikes the use of EQ solutions, as a rule, I'm really happy to have the 6dB XBass setting at my disposal.---I don't care for the strongest setting for 3D+, as it sounds, to my ears at least, as if it's adding some reverb, while bringing up the volume of any portion of the signal that's fully panned to the left or right channel. Not my cup of tea.The less aggressive 3D+ setting sounds very natural, however. I switch this in or out to taste, but it stays on, more often than not.I find two design issues annoying:1) They need to add an actual Bypass switch, so that you don't have to re-cable everthing to swtich it in and out of the signal path.2) All three of the 3-position toggle switches should be wired so that the least potent setting is at the bottom, the next most potent setting is in the middle and the srongest setting is at the top. (Currently, all three switches are arranged differently - which creates an unecessarily difficult learning curve.)That said, I'm very pleased with both the function and the build quality of the iTube2. I'm totally hooked on it - so much so, I might have to buy another one, to avoid having to move it from system to system in my house. :-)

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A real game changer
*by E***E on May 31, 2017*

I bought this device to use as a vacuum tube buffer not a preampifier, and it has remarkably improved the overall quality of sound of my main stereo. I have routed my universal player (CD's, SACD's and DVD-Audio discs), my streaming output, and my TV output into the iTube2 and then routed its output directly into my integrated amp. The result is a significant warming of the sound with no loss of clarity. There are 3 tube circuit settings: SET, classic tube sound, and push-pull, which offer different sound profiles. The SET sounds softer and more recessed, which might be suitable if your system has a bright, aggressive sound. The push-pull is more forward with the classic tube option in between. In my system, the more forward push-pull sounds best. But for headphone listening with my Bowers & Wilkins P7's, the classic tube setting sounds best. The improvement in sound is most noticeable on female voices and bright instruments like the trumpet. They now sound smoother, more natural and more musical. And the 3D circuit definitely improves the stereo imaging in a subtle but unmistakable way, even when listening through headphones. As for the bass boosting circuitry, I have no need for it as I have a full range audio system, but I am sure it would benefit smaller speakers more than simply cranking up the bass volume control. One note: give the unit between 30-40 seconds to warm up. It will be silent when you first switch it on. All-in-all, I can't recommend the iTube2 highly enough. It's a terrific addition to any audio system, unless it is already tube-based.
