Hoffman 16002 Horticultural Vermiculite 8 Quart is an efficient and popular soil conditioner. Loosens soil and provides aeration. Retains water. Can be used to start seeds, propagate cuttings and store bulbs. Blend with peat moss and perlite for a custom soilless mix.

Review: Great value! - This bag is going to last forever! I used this to make my own starter mix and have had excellent results with growing my watermelon, pumpkin, tomato and lemon seeds! My recipe: Approx. A quarter pound spagnum moss, 1 brick of coco peat, 1 cup of vermiculite and 1.5 Tbs of garden lime (to neutralize acid levels of spagnum moss). I just mixed these all together and soaked the mixture until it was all damp before putting in the baskets. Some people use just the coco peat bricks and vermiculite, however the spagnum moss is cheaper.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: is this TEKnically good for growing mushrooms?**
A: It's good for growing shrooms as an ingredient for the PF TEK.
Many folks at the Shroomery use it.
Even Amazon shows you that people who buy this also buy Brown Rice Flour. Not a coincidence.

**Q: Is this fine or coarse grade?  I need fine grade, specifically.**
A: I consider it fine. The pieces are not uniform. I don't know if we measure fine grades the same way though so I can't in good conscious recommend the product to you specifically

**Q: Does it contain fertilizer?**
A: No although it seems to be a mineral.  It expands when wet and hold moisture, thus helping seeds to germinate and grow and apparently also helping cuttings to take root.  I have not done cuttings in it yet, but plan to.  I just transplanted a small plant today that I started from seed in a 2" pot and that plant has a long root.  (Didn't have time to measure it, but maybe five inches.) You need to mix vermiculite with potting soil, of course.  I mix perlite, vermiculite and potting soil. Fertilize according to what you are planting in it.

**Q: Why so expensive? I can buy the same exact stuff down the road from me for $3.99 for 8 quarts.**
A: At what store? I like to buy Vermiculite in large quantities, I could really stock up if it's only $4 for 8 quarts!

It's my opinion that anyone working with really any type of plants should keep vermiculite on hand. I use this as a constant source in all of my soil mixes. No matter the type of plant I always add this stuff. It also works well for cuttings and propagating. It's good for seed starting really just about any application this has a purpose. This along with perlite are the 2 absolute must have items I will never be without. I grow everything from all of my garden plants from seed to cuttings from my meyer lemon tree. I have grapefruit, oranges, strawberries, blueberries and many many more. There isn't much I dont grow. It's one of my absolute favorite and most fulfilling hobbies. If u take gardening seriously u should make this purchase. Hope this helps out anyone that enjoys growing like I do.
