Of course, it spins down quickly (as expected since angular momentum is quite low), so it's just a quick flash, but bright enough nonetheless. The LED I happened to use is rated 2.0-2.2 volts, and I connected this LED to my bench power supply and noted I could get it to begin lighting up at 1.6V, and at 2.0V it only drew about 9mA. Added a pulley and placed a rubber band around it and my power drill and was able to get it to light steadily with steady rotation of the drill.
