This book on Mae Jemison fit the bill. My almost-6-year-old is in that spot where she needs harder material, but really wants pictures to accompany it. This is our first Ready to Read Level Three book, and it's perfect. We began with me reading it out loud. The book is definitely for stronger readers, and there are some parts that needed explaining for a kindergartener. But now that we've gone through it once, my daughter has taken to it on her own. Beyond being a great book about an amazing woman, You Should Meet Mae Jemison is a great option for expanding a child's world view. Although my daughter has an African-American cousin, we live in a very white community, and explaining that people have been — and continue to be — treated differently because of skin color (and gender) has been confusing.
