    Product works, but needs explanation

*by B***E on Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2016*

It works just fine. I think people just have a misconception about what this does and how it works because it is not really explained in the product description. This exists to serve a very simple purpose: to let you connect two network devices to a single existing network cable when, for whatever reason, you don't want to run another network cable or install a full-blown Ethernet switch. I am using this kit to connect two IP security cameras outdoors without having to run a second cable.*** How it works ***Normal network cables contain 8 wires. A 1000 Mbps (gigabit) network link requires all 8 wires. However a 100 Mbps link only requires 4 wires, leaving the other 4 unused. This kit splits those four extra wires off to "Jack 2" so that you can connect a second device. Any device normally capable of gigabit speed should work too, but it will only be able to achieve 100 Mbps speed.*** How to use it ***Unfortunately, this kit does not come with all you need. In addition to this "kit" you also need two RJ45 couplers and four additional network cables likely you will want really short cables for this). I am assuming that you have already run one long network cable between your router/switch and a device at a remote location. Here is how you would typically use the kit:Step 1) Connect an RJ45 coupler to each end of your existing long network cable.Step 2) The cable sharing kit comes with two identical dongles. Connect one dongle to each RJ45 coupler. Now, Jacks 1 and 2 on the first dongle are connected to Jacks 1 and 2 on the second dongle.Step 3) Connect both Jack 1 and Jack 2 to the router/switch using short network cables.Step 4) At the other end, connect your two devices to the two open RJ45 ports.See the attached diagram for how you might set this up to feed two IP security cameras.

If you are having issues, check your interconnects.

Worked as promised. I noticed some people complaining that only one side worked. Be aware that this “splitter” works by using the other half of the wires in an Ethernet cable that generally go unused. I thought I had the same problem until I looked closely at one of my cables’ connectors. It was only half populated. Many cheap cables that come “free” with various devices are like this. Once I used proper cables it worked great.

I an ethernet connection for cable internet. I ordered the Amazon Fire TV stick. After receiving the stick I realized I needed an adapter for the ethernet connection. After receiving the ethernet adapter I realized I needed an ethernet splitter so I could operate the computer and TV simultaneously and ordered this product. I plugged it in to the modem and connected to my device and no internet connection. As I look at the miniature instruction booklet I realize I need to be a cable guy technician to know what to do to make this work and I don't even really know if it is what I really need. I often wonder when these technologies are invented to improve the digital experience are they been made for technicians or the average person?
