Took awhile, but the bluejays (which we like, generally) figured it out too. The small birds do drop a lot of seed (sunflower). I wish it had a tray to catch the seed below. No luck gluing something to it, as the bottom is concave. Glad they came in a set of two, because the critters nibbled the first one away in less than a week! The most positive thing I can say is that when filled, it is strong enough to support a large raccoon clinging to the bottom with all four legs without breaking the handle. Wish I'd had a camera handy! I gave the feeder 3 stars because many kinds of birds were able to feed if they were willing to wait until the squirrels finished or I scared them away. So, if squirrels and raccoons are part of the equation, I don't recommend these feeders.
