As far as supportive or soft sleep surface, both are supportive, but I have to note the new one seems to have firmer bolsters and thicker memory foam than the one received last year. Both foam inserts have egg crate shaped surface. So perhaps the company uses different sources, thus the variance in good/poor reviews. They last a long time if your dog is non-destructive. All of our dogs love it and take turns for it. If I was a dog, I would want one. It comes assembled and ready to use. The thickness of the mattress is appropriate and feels good to the touch. In terms of size it will fit medium to large dogs comfortably. Extra-Large dogs (i.e., King Shepherd, San Bernard) would be a stretch. The cover is not waterproof but is machine washable. If you need some liquid protection, consider installing a disposable dog pad between the cover and the mattress.
