They help protect the countertop below the machine AND they allow the machine to be easily rotated for access to the manually filled water tank. In a superautomatic machine this slippery aspect is desirable as these machines require no resistance to movement during operation. A traditional espresso machine, on the other hand,requires slip resistance due to the torque applied to the filter basket when it is locked into the group head. Good looking, well made, cost effective and perfect for my needs...I am very happy with my purchase.
