Written for those who already have a general understanding of the field, the author gives the ins and outs of how to fix everything from small refrigerators up to large commercial systems. The author is not a professional writer and the book could be better organized, but this is the book to buy if you want to learn not how AC works, but how to fix it. Lots of detail and tells you exactly how to do things. At a price of only twenty three dollars, this book is a real bargain and has far more of the real practical helpful information than AC books that cost over a hundred dollars. Most books are written by a writer who researches the subject, which means all of his information is second hand and he couldn't fix an AC unit if his life depended on it. Where as this book is written by a guy who was a AC repairman first, and a writer second. You could study one of the professional writers books for years and never learn the tricks of the trade of how things are really done in the field that are in this book. The book is a gold mine of first hand experience on how to fix AC units, a book you probably will want to keep in your service truck. I have read a few AC books over the years, and none of them had the real stuff that you need to know like this book does. The professional AC books all come off as if they were written by the manufactures' sales rep and are just about as useful when things break. When the chips are down, you want an author who has been there and knows what he is talking about. Review: A practical guide - As an engineer who knows not a lot about refrigeration I thought I would buy a book to enlighten me. As a practical guide it certainly does just that with lots of detailed electrical, mechanical and cooling system information about most types of appliance. The author certainly has a lot of experience which he puts on paper in a very readable manner. On the other hand I don't agree with the author who implies that this book would enable someone who knew nothing of mechanical or electrical engineering in general to tackle a fridge or air-con system for the first time. He assumes a level of knowledge when describing procedures and even with my particular background I still have gaps in my understanding of what I would need to do to repair an appliance. Although much better informed after reading this book I would still be very careful about tackling a faulty unit.
