I had read in other reviews about the durability of this product which caused me to spring and purchase this "backpack" for my 80-pound hound mix. Upon the first few uses I was enthralled with the product. It has great capacity for dog and human baggage and the material is a classic olive drab which also matches some of my hiking gear. I thought I had finally found the dog pack that was practical and good-looking. Unfortunately, upon the 4th and 5th uses (by uses, I mean long walks with gear, 1-2 hours) the straps started to tear off from the actual bag, essentially making the bag useless. Maybe I could convert it to a bike pannier... but at this point it just sits. What a waste for a product with high potential. This might be a product for a dainty small dog around the neighborhood, but I don't see it being used for hikes, heavy gear, or big dogs; the straps will simply not endure. And what is a backpack without straps? I will be contacting the seller to attempt and reconcile this purchase. At the time, this was the only pack I could find that would fit her measurements. It’s been through rain, snow, heat, and is now on it’s 2nd dog. That’s right, this pack outlasted my mastiff, and is now being used by our very chonky 100 lb German shepherd/bulldog mix. Although there was nothing wrong with this pack, at some point I decided we should upgrade to a pack with larger panniers and a more weatherproof fabric. The search only left me frustrated and thankful for the pack we have. I now realize how lucky we were to find this wonderful pack, and at such a bargain price. Yes, I wish the bags were larger. As is, my dog can carry 2 liters of water, 4 days of food, treats, poo bags, hand sanitizer and his food & water bowls. On day trips we sometimes skip the human pack and make the dog carry our ten essentials plus lunch for two. This pack will not fit a dog sleeping bag, unless we tie it to the top. My exhaustive search of dog backpacks has not found a better alternative with larger bags or tie downs. This pack adjusts to fit a very, very large dog, and unlike other packs, the saddle bags hang completely off to the sides, even on a very barrel-chested animal. The canvas material is so durable I think it may outlast this dog as well and end up being used by a third animal. The downside of canvas is it is a little funky when wet, and it does not dry quickly. We live in the Pacific Northwest where moisture is a part of our lives 3 seasons of the year. Not surprisingly, the pack retains some wet dog smell. Luckily though, it holds up well to washing. Since our dog also smells like wet dog when he crawls into our tent after hiking through rain or snow, I have made my peace with it. I can’t remember how many years ago we bought this dog backpack but in that amount of time I’ve gone through 2 daypacks myself and my son grew from a little kid to a man. All the zippers and connectors are still in excellent condition. 2022 Update: According to desertcart, I bought this pack in September 2018. It is now March 2022. The tabs that attach the neck strap to the pack have finally given out. I plan to repair and keep using it. Seriously rugged. It will hold her water and snacks plus a bit of our stuff. Our dog is large Sheep a doodle who did not like the bigger vets that would carry more stuff. This vest is shorter and very comfortable for her. **Q: My english mastiff weighs 230 pounds , will this fit giant bred k-9 , he is quite a bit larger than a st. bernard** A: No. My dog is 168 pounds and I had to replace the neck strap with a belt I had (I used to wear the belt with my blue jeans). And the chest strap probably won't fit your dog either (the chest strap is tight on my dog right now and it's extended all the way out). Your dog's rib cage will be too big. The belly strap will probably fit fine (because it's extra long and doesn't really need to be as long as it is. But the other two straps will definitely be too small for your dog. **Q: Would this fit a 40lb queensland heeler?** A: Three or four days? I don't think so. These pouches are small, meant for a day hike or a small medic kit. **Q: I have a German Shepherd puppy. He's roughly 40 lbs right now. Could he wear it comfortably now and then continue wearing it as he gets bigger?** A: The short answer is that it will probably do just fine. That said, weight isn't as helpful as a chest measurement would be. There are 2 adjustable straps and 1 a removable collar threaded through loops on the front of the pack. The max diameter on the straps is: 38" Chest; and 38" Waist. so, if you take a piece of yarn something and wrap it around your dog just behind his front legs near his armpit across his shoulders, and do the same about 8" behind that spot you'll have your two around the body measurements for this pack. My pup has a 29" chest and the chest strap has 3 or 4 inches of adjustment left. Around his mid-section/belly it is snugged down to the max and has room for 2 fingers to keep it comfortable. I don't see any reason he couldn't grow into it, but you'd have to measure him to see if it will fit now. On the up side, dogs grow super fast in that age bracket. Buy it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Looking, Nice Design, but Way Too Flimsy *by A***X on August 14, 2017* We took our 50ish lb goldendoodle on several hikes with this pack. It fit her well, sat nicely, and looked great. However, as others have commented, the stitching/quality is just not good. It fell apart on our third or fourth hike halfway through. The seams just came undone and it barely held together until the end of the hike. This is close to a good product so I think it warrants 3 stars but the quality really needs to be improved. Edit: Updated to 4 stars. OneTigris contacted me and sent me an updated version. The quality is improved in a few ways. Most notably: * Stitching seems better * Pockets seem more durable and there are more of then including an ID card transparent sleeve. * Mesh padding inside which definitely seems more comfortable for the pooch and helps keep the pack in place. However, a couple things that were included in the original were removed which kinda sucks: * No D ring on the back. It's an issue for on leash hiking. * No handle on top. This is a problem on difficult scrambles where I need to assist my dog or if I have to hold her back from chasing a squirrel or something. Overall this is a pretty decent pack. There are better but this is about 85% of the way there.
