Review: This Drok tester is a pretty good go/no-go tester for components - The Drok tester is similar to many units, but is better built than most. The product includes a zero insertion force socket which may be plugged into the header socket holes protruding from the front of the unit. The fit of the ZIF could be firmer, and it probably would have been just as well to mount the ZIF to the circuit board and not bother with headers. The operation is pretty straight forward and the unit had no trouble identifying various types of thyristors, junction transistors, MOSFETs and diodes I tried. The only device which tripped up detection was a 50 Amp Schotty diode, which showed as “no component.” To be fair, that diode also eluded an expensive tester. I know the diode is good because it behaves properly under load. I believe this tester is a handy addition to have on the work bench as long as you keep your expectations realistic about what it can do. How do I fix this?** A: I found out that the tester can’t measure inductance below 10uH. It helps to buy a pack of inductors of various values to always check the tester. This is how I found out that mine cant’ measure inductors below 10uH. **Q: Can it be powered with a cable?** A: I did a simple mod in order to power it from a basic 9vdc power supply l. I simply installed a standard 12mm polarised jack into the case (theres a slot in the top center of the pcb to allow room) and use a currwnt limited wall wart or bench top piwer supply for the required 9 volts (solder the 2 wires from the jack to the battery terminal connections on the pcb matching polarity). Mine has worked a charm and no worries plus you have the option of using either power source. If you would like to know more on this mod reply and I will supply you with a more detailed step by step with photos. **Q: will this tester work with germanium transistors? also, does it report transistor leakage?** A: I haven't found a germanium transistor to test yet, but I have tested Ge small-signal diodes with mine, so I'm fairly certain this tester can properly identify and test Ge teansistors as well. If so, it will show the device type (PNP/NPN), ID the leads (BCE), and show the hfe (gain), but it will not show a leakage current value. The primary diference between Ge and Si devices is the difference in the voltage drop across a forward-biased junction. Ge junctions show a 0.3 - 0.4v drop, and Si junctions show 0.6 - 0.7v. **Q: will it tell me the pin identification?** A: With in reason. You will need the spec sheet, say you have a bad unit, it may identify it as two diodes and you know it is not two diodes, it is a 222. So YES it will / it has done it correctly for me on good devices, on devices that fail, it may show unknown device or something like a mess of diodes or something else. Nothing the spec sheet would show. hope this helps. I also use a Heathkit transistor tester so I can supply a load. If you are working with hard to replace /find items, I suggest you also get something that will supply a real load so you can see if it breaks down after 2 minutes or something like that. hope this helps, I am pleased with cost vs use I have gotten. SO far so good. Get used to getting the pins in 1 2 3 any way, but 1,2,3. The bad: the LCD display is small/hard to read for people over 40, the ZIF socket is flimsy and this impacts the user's ability to securely attach component wires you want to test. It could definitely be improved. Finally, the 40 second automatic shutoff is a pain. It sounds like a long time, but in practice, it is not. If they extended the automatic shutoff time to something like two minutes, it would be perfect and I suspect the battery life wouldn't be impacted all that much. Finally, the "manual" is not much use, more of a spec sheet than a user manual. The good: it is accurate. Very accurate. I have benchmarked it against various components of known value, as well as another component measurement device. The unit also provides very detailed component information. The color LCD display is nice, though as I said previously, you will have to wear reading glasses if you are middle-aged or older. I have used this device frequently over the last 6 months and it has never had even a hiccup.
