Fixes shifter slop and rattle with revs. Pain to install

*by M***N on Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2024*

Replacing this bushing is a game changer for driving feel and removes all slop and rattling noise that varies with RPM, but is notoriously difficult to install. I was able to replace in under an hour. Here are my tricks:1. Completely remove the passenger seat. This doesn't even require tools and gives you the needed space.2. When you remove the rear shifter bushing/coupler, slip a long zip tie into the thru-hole at the rear end of the shift rod but don't tighten it. Leave about a 2-3" loop.3. Attach a dog leash to the zip tie. Again, DO NOT tighten the zip tie.4. Remove front shifter (keep track of reverse lockout spring and bracket orientation)5. Locate the expired pieces of the old bushing. There is a metal spring clip that is still around the shift rod that you'll need to reuse. Keep that in sight as you proceed with the next step.6. Use long pliers to pull shift rod forward in relation to the tunnel. No access plate is available on mid-70s Super Beetles like mine, but there is plenty room in the subframe to pull the whole shift rod forward without it poking out the front of the car.6. Once the rear end of the shift rod is visible, carefully unclip the dog leash.7. Slip the spring clip off the end of the shift rod and attach to the new shifter bushing.8. Thread the dog leash forward thru the shifter bushing and press shifter bushing inside the shifter bushing bracket with your fingers (this is the easy part)9. Carefully re-clip the dog leash to the zip tie.10. Grease the living hell out of the shift rod and use pliers to push the rear end of the shift rod into the new bushing.11. Go to the rear of the car (the rear shifter coupler access plate) and pull on the dog leash to pull the shift rod through the bushing to the rear of the car.12. Reattach the rear shift coupler, reinstall the front shifter and you're done.
