It was developed to distinguish between diamonds and its other simulants using the principles of thermal conductivity. In its second generation, the Presidium Gem r II provides a quick and easy way to identify diamonds/moissanites and separates up to 16 common colored gemstones based on their thermal conductivity with its clear and direct analog display. Is that the same as not distinguishing between genuine or imitation?** A: Yes, and no. Imitation can be like, if they colored a Sapphire to be a Ruby. So, if you buy a Ruby, and it tests Sapphire, it might be Sapphire. You will also want to buy the Presidium Refractometer for a better accuracy (I own both). However, even with both tools, it takes a keen eye, and training to truly know what you're looking at. However, both tools have successfully identified Diamond and Moissanite for me. (Back to the issue at hand). Natural is mined, where as synthetic is lab grown. This generally means that the hardness index will be very similar to the real thing. If you find imitation, it can be anything from a different stone that's been colored, all the way to colored/dyed glass. **Q: Can i buy extra tips for my presidium i already bought** A: You can buy new probes for it. **Q: What is the newest version?
