I purchased this one last night as soon as I saw that it was available and was finished a few hours later, and now I'm stuck again, waiting for another one to come out, its a vicious cycle :PI'm terrible at writing reviews, but I quite liked the book, so here goes-this book has lots of action and adventure. Del and her business partner Simon are 20-somethings: snarky, geeky, smart, and funny. While looking for archeological treasure in an abandoned mine shaft they find themselves in the middle of monsters, aliens, murder, and mayhem. Unlike Amaranthe from the Emperor's Edge books, I think Del would rather just get out of town and avoid the whole rampaging scary monster scene altogether, and is sort of dragged a bit reluctantly into adventure. She and Simon are joined by Temi, her childhood BFF, who is looking for a job and gets more than she bargained for. Lots of running around, chasing, fighting in caves and tunnels, run-ins with the monster and the mysterious biker dudes, mixed in with sitting around the laptop trying to find a decent wifi signal. Like Indiana Jones, with less archaeology, Del even has a bullwhip.For me Del and Simon made the book, I loved their snarky (but not annoyingly so) arguments and back and forth moments. They don't have magic powers or super warrior skills, but they're smart and think on their feet when trouble comes around. (they do tend to leap headfirst into trouble)This is not a romance (if that's what you are looking for) but there are hints that maybe in the future there might be, its very much an action adventure, with humor and paranormal/fantasy aspects. The characters seem like real people, not forced or unnatural, like people you'd want to hang out with.There are quite a few loose ends once the dust settles. Its not a cliffhanger by any means, there is an ending, but it definitely leaves room for more to come.as always, very well-written, with no grammar or spelling errors (that I noticed) to take the reader out of the story. I had read the beginning of her steam punk fantasy series, The Emperor's Edge, and it was a good book. But I admit that I haven't gone on to read the rest of the series, as of yet. Her newest book, Torrent moves out of her standard territory and into a modern setting.I found the plot intriguing and the characters likable. I was a little worried that giving the main character, Delia, a background in archaeology and a whip would make her a disappointing offspring of Indiana Jones and Lara Croft. But Delia, who tells the story in the first person, is more realistic. Though she has a background in the martial arts, she is not very sure of herself. She also is not the "hero" of the story, a fact that I found refreshing. Simon and Temi were a mixed bag. Simon, the geek with which I had hoped to identify the most, was said to have considered his heritage very important. This would have been great if it had been brought up anymore in the story. Temi, a former tennis player who had given up her career after a leg injury, seemed a bit shallow, although the ending left us knowing that she will have to have an important part in future books.The pros are that we were left with unanswered questions that will make us want to read future books to see what happens. The characters interact with each other realistically and I almost felt as if I were in the room with them.The cons were a few mature words (at most, PG-rating). One female character discusses having kissed another woman when she was a teenager, but it isn't glamorized. The book is probably suitable for an older teen or above.I enjoyed the book. Especially when it got to the halfway point and the pace really picked up. I'd recommend it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Fun new series by Lindsay Buroker *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2013* Lindsay is one of my favorite authors. What I particularly like is the fun, upbeat characters she portrays. These characters do not live in a perfect world. Rather they live in a world that has plenty of troubles and evils, but not a dark, depressing dystopia devoid of hope or humor. Hope and humor are, I believe, the defining characteristic of her major characters. This makes for an uplifting and enjoyable read and makes me wish I could buckle on my sword and join the team!Now on to Torrent:Other reviewers have eloquently given a synopsis of the book and the characters, so I don't need to repeat what has already been said. However, I would like to comment on the character development. I agree with the reviewers who have noted that Torrent's characters seem a little shallow when compared to the characters in Emperor's Edge. There is a great similarity between Delia (Torrent) and Amaranth (EE). Of the two, Amaranth is more complex and fully developed. In fact, the entire EE world is more complex and fully developed. Torrent is something of a YA book. This is not a problem for me. I like well written YA books! Delia and the other characters of Torrent are well thought out and developing as the story progresses and I expect to see more development in future episodes. If Torrent is read on its own merit it is hugely enjoyable.At the end of the book I was left wanting to know more about the mysterious Harley riding strangers and their culture.
