Yes. I have used it on a 1500 Floyd on a Schecter. Is wide enough to probably handle an 8 string Floyd.

If the bridge is recessed in the body, it will work and will likely hold the bridge up pretty high. That will really help with string changing.

Q: Is this used in place of the wooden tremolo block?

No, this is strictly used for string changing on guitars with floating tremolos such as a floyd rose. You lift the tremolo slightly with the bar an place the TremBlock under the floyd to hold it up in a fixed position making it easier to access the allen screws to change the strings.
