Review: Old Dog - New Trick. I Like It! - For the past 50+ years I've used a Degan A=440 Vibrations Guaranteed tuning fork as a reference pitch to tune my guitars and basses. And while I can do a pretty rspectable job of getting my instruments well tuned, using the Korg OT-120 is quite a bit faster and even more accurate than my ear. I was also pleased to discover that the Korg tuner is in 100% agreement with my trusty Degan tuning fork. That said, the VU meter needed a minor re-centering adjustment that was easily completed following the steps described in the instruction sheet. Figuring out how to use the OT-120 to do the simple task of tuning a classical guitar was intuitive. Auto-Medium mode did the trick. The tuner automatically identifies the note you're closest to and tells you if you're sharp or flat relative to A=440. I may need to refer to the instructions to take advantage of some of the advanced features this tuner has, that is, if I decide to use them. N.B. You will need a tiny jeweler's size phillips screwdriver to make the VU meter adjustment. N.B. Like so many electronc devices, the OT-120's multi-lingual instructions are provided on a single, poster-sized piece of paper that defies reading and refolding. The same instructions can be downloaded in easy to read .PDF format from Korg's web site. And you don't need to refold them after you've read them. N.B. Two AAA alkaline batteries were NOT included. Neither is the 120-volt power supply. I'm using a pair of AAA NiMH rechargables that appear to be working just fine.
Review: A great chromatic tuner - My Boss TU 12 tuner started to fail and this Korg OT 120 is a fantastic replacement. The tunings are very precise, and the tuner is easy to use. I do studio recording and precision tuning is essential. I love the analog meter. The digital display is a bit hard to read with the tuner standing, but very easy with it laying flat. Both mic and input tunings work well that way so the display is not an issue for me. I highly recommend this tuner. Follow up to this review. I am so impressed with this tuner that I bought a backup for my recording studio. This is precision tuning.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Has anyone had any success with using this device to tune a piano?**
A: Anyone who says or thinks that they can tune a piano with this device has a) never tuned a piano before. b) doesn't have a trained ear that will allow them to hear that the end result is severely mediocre at best. c) doesn't understand that it took a piano tuner at least 500 tunings before they were confident enough to even call themselves one.

There's nothing wrong with trying to tune your own piano. But to think that this device is going to "get you there" is a misconception. The fact that this is being sold as a piano tuning device is false advertising.

Go visit any piano technician in your area and I guarantee they will laugh at the notion that this device will accurately tune a piano.

You want the real deal? Download TuneLab for free. It's a $350 app and you can use the full program for free with the exception that it will time out for 2 minutes every 14 notes.

Remember. 95% of people can't hear a piano that's out of tune. When they notice it n it's WAY out of tune. So, pay no attention to positive reviews that say this worked. I guarantee you, it didn't.

But, to each their own. Just know that there are far better ways to learn.

**Q: Could this tune down to 432 instead of 440?**
A: Hi, Regina! I just tried it out on the tuner, and it does indeed tune down to 432! I didn't see just how far down it will go - guessing you're a Baroque player? If you would like me to check how far down it will tune (415 or 392), let me know. This is a great little tuner, and does all my old one did and more - for about 1/3 the cost!!

**Q: Does it offer a just intonation setting under the additional temperament presets?**
A: I'm on the road at the moment without it but I'm sure that no, it doesn't. It has a fair number of temperaments available, while unfortunately 1/4 comma meantone is not one of them. Only 1/6 comma E- or D#. I seem to be playing more and more in 1/4 comma so that's a bit of a downer. I'm not even sure that Just Intonation is a temperament, as the pure intervals move with the chords being played through all keys in just. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a tuner that can do it, maybe an iPhone app, but I think the only way the Korg would be able to do it is to use the temperament closest to pure for the notes you want to check and then know how much to add or subtract when you are reading the meter.Good question though. It makes me think.... It's been a great tuner for me other than the 1/4 comma problem, where I've had to set the frets with a ruler and then make small adjustments to whatever keyboard instrument is there. It's survived several drops from the music stand and the batteries seem to last forever.

**Q: there are 8 different temperaments listed on this tuner - but not equal temperament - which temperament is used for tuning the piano**
A: The Transpose/Temperament button allows you to transpose the pitch up or down, or use a particular temperament and all the listed temperaments are not equal temperament. If you cycle through the Transpose/Temperament button until the screen is blank, i.e. IT does not list either a specific temperament or a pitch (C#, D, D# etc.), then that is equal temperament that you would use for tuning the piano. The calibration should read A - 440.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Korg OT-120
*by B***L on August 19, 2010*

The Korg OT-120 is the perfect tuner and everyone should have one. The tuner comes with its own case that can be fastened to a belt--Ha-ha I will not be using that belt strap feature! Furthermore, the tuner is large compared to digital models, but the experience this product provides makes up for its size. The display is very easy to read with a white and orange panel. Like most tuners, one can set the caliper and also it has a note playback feature. It plays a concert pitch and one can play along and hear the waves. This helps build listening skills and intonation. Finally, a nice feature of this product, though I have not used this feature much, is that it has a transposition button. One can set the tuner to the key of their instrument and the tuner will read in that key. This will be helpful to those younger musicians not familiar with concert pitch. The Korg OT-120 is highly recommended by me and many musicians.
