Being that there is only wires on the ends of it, it is a little more enclosed for a critter. We are, however, returning it for a refund. The only problem we have with it (yes there is only 1) is that there is not enough cage to it for our syrian hamster to attach all that she needs. The wheel is too small and her bigger wheel doesn't fit through the hole provided so we would have to have it in there on a stand and that took up too much space. The shelves are not sturdy enough for as big as she is (and still growing). She will be the size of a sweet potato when fully grown (and probably as heavy).It is a great cage for a dwarf hamster or something of that size.I read a review where someone said their hamster cage door didnt stay closed... you have to first pull the lock mechanism outward then upward then push it back and it will lock.For the person who said their hamster escaped out of the top, you have to make sure once you close the top lid, push down towards the edge of the cage to lock it. To open it you push back then pull up.The locking mechanisms are wonderful. The access to your tiny critter is great as well. The little house is cute and could be used to take your pet to the vet or on trips since it has a lock tab for the door.To the person who said their hamster suffocated in the house in their bedding, I highly doubt that happened. First off, if your hamster can't breathe through their bedding, you are using the wrong kind. If they are trapped by their bedding you are using too much. There are ventalation holes in the house so air can get in easily. Our Syrian could easly fit in the house comfortably. They don't need a lot of bedding. I'm guessing your little one unfortunately died of other causes.I just wish there was a bit more space, a bit more bars, and a little larger hole for the wheel knob to go through and then we could have kept this cage. I needed 6 because my kid's 2 syrian hamsters needed new cages and one of them got unexpectedly pregnant, so we have 6 altogether, and the babies are too old to stay together. I tried to find a way to contact the seller and ask, but there seems to be no way through this site to contact them. So I had to buy other cages elsewhere.It was carefully packaged with clear instructions. It looks great. It is a little flimsy. I took out the wheels because they are way too small, and moved the food tray to the 2nd tier, then wedged the 8in wheel in there. I'm trying out the water bottles for now, but the other ones they have are way better.This is an upgrade for them since half of them were in bins. We honestly had no clue how much space syrian hamsters needed until they started biting to cage and going crazy at night. Also, we started out with dwarfs, the 2 older hamsters were in Kaytee cages from the pet store. It's misleading because even the pet store workers sold us these cages for our hamsters and there are pics of syrian hamsters on the box. These Iris cages are way better and it was so great to read the reviews of other syrian hamster owners.*Updated info after a few months: I was able to fit an 8in wheel into the cage by taking one of the slides out then wedging it in under the highest tier.We've had each hamster escape at least once or 2xs. Each time, we were so rushed in getting them into the cage that we didn't see from where they escaped, so as an extra precaution, we tied a string on the bottom metal latch and the taped the 2 top plastic doors on top. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but delicately made! *by M***Y on Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020* Cons: Upon arrival there was a huge crack in the upper left corner of the front piece which was so disappointing but luckily it was still able to be put together and I secured it with clear tape.Also the 2nd level would NOT stay up on its own, i had to place a zip tie underneath to keep it held up. Overall it’s very delicate so it has to be handled carefully. I wish that they had an option to make the bottom deeper for animals like gerbils that like to burrow.. and I wanted a 3 tier!! Out of stock so I picked this one.Pros: To me it’s the most beautiful cage I could find for my 2 gerbils, it’s very easy to clean and despite gerbils being natural chewers, they have not escaped or chewed any of the plastic pieces at all!! As long as you are stimulating your gerbil with lots of things to chew on like seeds, paper towel cardboards and hay they shouldn’t be tempted to chew on the plastic things at all.
