## Description

The processing of iron has a long tradition in the Stubai Valley. The area iron mines were of such high quality that in the 14th century blacksmiths in Fulpmes were already producing hand tools. In 1897 engaged craftsmen formed a cooperative (marketed under the Stubai name) to manage the future for both production and sales. Today 26 member factories are processing several thousand tons of steel each year. The production program consists of a wide range of tools for professional users such as metal workers, woodworkers, woodcarvers, woodturners, forestry workers, auto mechanics, roofers, masons, tile setters, electricians and others. Our own forge manufactures products for our members and also semi-finished products for other industries in Austria and other European countries. Approximately half of the production is exported to more than 50 countries worldwide. The brand name "Stubai" stands for quality and workmanship. The Stubai Tool industry is the biggest hand tool manufacturer in Austria.

Review: I used it to shave down an eight foot plank of macassar ebony. Worked beautifully. Lovely traditional draw knife.
Review: I use this knife to remove bark from Douglas fir trees for log cabin construction. These trees have thick and heavy bark. The knife works very well for the task, and if it works for me chances are that it will be good enough for whatever you might need it to do. I read a bunch of critical reviews of this knife, and I can say that I disagree. The knife arrived sharp, which truly isn't and shouldn't be a point of complaint anyway considering that yes, you will need to sharpen this tool periodically. Personally I would question any review that talks about the sharpness of a knife as a complaint. Any wood working tool will need sharpened during use and it's strange to imply otherwise. The handles are NOT plastic. They are high quality wood with a good coating of paint. Very sturdy. I saw a review saying that their tool rusted. This is likewise a bizarre complaint. Trees are full of water, and if you don't maintain your tools you can expect them to degrade. Simply clean and oil your knife after use, as you would with any woodworking equipment. All in all I would completely recommend this draw knife to anyone who needs a tool of this type. Spend the extra money and avoid the cheaper knives, you won't regret it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does draw knife come with blade guard, if not can it be purchased?**
A: yes, mine did come with a blade guard, it also came sharp and was ready to use right when I recived it.

**Q: What is the hardness level of the steel?**
A: I don't know the actual hardness, but it it is a seriously good quality blade and really holds and edge.

**Q: Is it China made? Where was it produced?**
A: Stubia is a european manufacturer of different high quality metal components. I have learned of them from using their mountaineering equipment which is some of the best made. I cannot say for certain where the draw knife is made but have assumed that it was made in Europe. In other adds for the knife it is stated that it is produced by a European tool maker.

**Q: Would this do well for removing wood off large staves for bow making?**
A: Yes - I'd call it a medium duty drawknife. It will give you much better control than a heavier duty knife as you near the final shape of your bow. You will probably still want to use a spokeshave for the final shaping.
