I have connected it to my laptop at home and it worked well for watching original dvds, but I was unable to play purchased copies of dvds either at home, or through the Mac mini at work. When I asked for help from my school's tech support, they made disparaging comments about the cost-related quality of my unit but they did not offer any constructive assistance. I also needed to write and rewrite some data. Works great may not run very fast but fine for what I need it for. Use the backup plug for more power but don't run at fastest speed if you are burning a CD. Go bout 8x speed and you won't have no problems.
