Came wrapped in plastic which unfortunately scraped the surface with what looks like friction during shipping.It does have a very strong new plastic smell but it's not necessarily unpleasant.Just new plastic.It's that oddly clean smell almost like new car.I haven't exactly figured out how best to pit the knives in. It's just long vertical strips that kind of grab at the knife. I was expecting it to be a softer feel when you inserted the knife. Something that felt like it molded to the shape.It just misses the mark a bit for me. Looks cheaper than it is some how.But it is a great concept.
