Middle of the road hot water shrinks them but not all the way back to their original size. This is fine for me because even "steched out" from use they still hold my hair in place until I'm ready to shrink it back to size, It just doesn't wear well on my wrist for later use once stretched out. They don't leave strange marks in my hair which is shocking given their shape. My hair is thin and ponytail bands tend to steadily slide out. They also get tangled with hair knotted on them. These are better then other hair ties that knot up in hair or fall out fast. They actually mostly stay put. They do come out eventually, but last a lot longer then other hair bands. They are also easy to put on or remove. They do not tend to knot in hair and hair does not "stick" to them, for lack of a better word. They do the job and are inobtrusive.
