In order to actually get the indicator to work, I had to disassemble and heavily modify one of the adaptors to reduce it's height, which involved removing the tightening ring from the collet piece, cutting the tabs off with a dremel, and drilling and tapping a hole in the side in order to fit a grub screw to hold the dial test indicator in place. This finally made the shortest adaptor work so I could find TDC. Additionally the brass insert which screws into the spark plug hole adaptor needed a slot cutting in the top in order to unscrew from the adaptor. If you manage to nip this up tight by hand, you'll have a job removing it again.
