So searching around, I found that if I got a lockbox and put a house key in it, gave her and her hospice care the combination (and put the dog behind closed doors) I wouldn't have to worry so much. If I didn't return in a reasonable amount of time, she could call for help. So far, so good. I spent a lot of time looking at reviews on Amazon before settling on the Beisen Hardware lock as the best choice I can find. I've tested it (and the spare key!) several times, without problems. It fits my large "do not duplicate" house key, but not the tiny key chain attached to it, which would have been nice as I use this for my guest house. Also, im pretty sure I could force the box open without a tremendous amount of effort... But if an intruder were planning to break in to your home, it would be easier to force the door/window than mess with the box.
