There are mushrooms and there are black truffles. And then there is black tea and there is Darjeeling. While we all love the “basic” versions of things, sometimes you want something with a little more depth, character, and elegance. This is why Darjeeling teas are called the “Champagne of Teas.” Darjeeling gets this flavor through its unique harvesting, rolling, and Indian terroir (that means soil to tea nerds like us). What you end up with is a tea that is lighter and less “bitey” than most black teas, yet more layered and complex than green teas. Tasting Notes Some call it “The Land of the Dancing Mists.” To us it's simply home to one of our favorite black teas which balances fruit, nut, and floral flavors with an unusual muscatel character. Sourcing This particular Darjeeling is known as an Autumnal Darjeeling from the famous Makaibari Tea Farm. The owners actually live on the farm and provide for over 600 families. In 1971, Makaibari decided to move to a “beyond organic” approach that believes the sum is greater than the parts. This means that instead of using chemicals to fertilize the plants, they allow native plants and herbs to grow alongside the plants instead of being pulled as weeds. The tea plants are then allowed to integrate into the overall ecosystem of the local rainforest to create a fully biodynamic and organic tea farm. Review: Light and aromatic - I'm not a tea expert, but this Darjeeling has a good scent dry (a little bit mild), and a good sweet, flowery flavor when brewed. This tea does NOT brew into a dark, malty color but remains transparent and light. This is a delightful tea and I'm glad it's organic as well. The leaves are as shown, large and curled, and don't fall out of a mesh tea ball. Is it dark, and robust?** A: It depends on how long you let it steep and how much you put in to brew. I have a large cup tea steeper that makes one pretty large cup. It’s a typical Darjeeling. Mild, delicate flavor after 2-3 minutes, but gets intense after 5 minutes or so. Also depends on the amount of leave you put in. I use a small teaspoon for delicate flavor or a heaping teaspoon if I want a more intense flavor. I love this tea. It’s very smooth and has a fantastic flavor. I buy it over and over. **Q: Does this have a very noticeable muscatel flavor?** A: No **Q: The description says: “this particular is autumnal darjeeling , makaibari farm.” so why then do the reviews talk about several other teas?** A: Because Amazon still hasn't figured out that different teas are not like different shirt sizes, and that lumping together reviews of black tea, green tea, flavored tea, Indian tea, Chinese tea, herbal tea...etc. is idiotic, and completely undermines the utility of the product review system. I'm not going to trudge through hundreds of reviews just the find the ones that pertain to the one tea I'm interested in. **Q: What flush is the Darjeeling?** A: 'Flush' refers to the growing seasons of the Darjeeling tea and therefore the harvests. An experienced Darjeeling tea drinker may prefer one 'flush' over another as color, taste and quality will vary.
