The straight side or the tapered side?** A: You should be able to see the numbers on the plate while you are driving the wood through the hole. **Q: what else? do you have to buy to go with this** A: Like Eric stated. I'd put it in a drill chuck and force it through the holes. To round/taper it, prior to making the dowel, I use a bench grinder with a sanding wheel on it. While it's in the drill, I put the blank at a steep angle, and just turn it with the drill against the sand paper. You could probably do the same without the bench grinder, and just put a piece of sandpaper your bench, and tun the blank with the drill. **Q: Is there a straight portion in the hole before the counterboring begins to permit sharpening if the hole mouth begins to round over?** A: Yes. There is between 40 and 60 thousandths of straight bore before the counterbore and only a few thousandths need to be removed to sharpen and will likely stay sharp for a long long time between sharpenings. **Q: What is the largest size dowel you can make with this plate?** A: Lol. The description on the plate says the largest hole size is 5/8". Suggest you read the description next time.
