The bed stayed in the boxes until August 2nd. I was totally amazed when I took everything out...everything was just fine, the side and head/foot rails were a bit crooked, but since they had been boxed for over 7 months that wasn't a shocker. I guess what shocked me was that within just a few hours everything had straightened out. The bed was very easy to put together...I did it totally by myself. The mattress had two fill holes, one was actually to let the air out as it filled which was great. I didn't have to slide a broom across it to get the air pockets out like I have with other water beds! I did not use the heater, the warning on the heater said not to use it with a soft side, so I do wonder why that was the one that was included?, but really in Hawaii, we shouldn't need a heater, especially with the thickness of the mattress cover and a pillowtop mattress pad. The first night we slept on it was wonderful, we had spent 6 months on a 2 inch camper mattress and then moved to an 18 inch air mattress. My husband likes less water than me, so I did wonder if I would find it comfortable, but it is really comfy. We have a softside waterbed at our home in FL and paid almost twice what this one cost and I like this one better. Customer service was really good. They always called me back when they said they would and was very patient with the questions I had and gave me great information. I really had doubts about buying a bed through the mail, putting it in a container to ship 6000 miles and then store in another container for 6 months, but this bed came through with flying colors. It zips on and off. (you would need a big washing machine though...probably commercial, like at a laundromat) ...I ended up talking with the company that sells this bed thru Amazon... They call you after you order to see what kind of wave action you want. I believe you can also upgrade the mattress pillow top to a higher end one with memory foam inside of it as well. I wanted to get completely away from anything with memory foam...used a water bed for over 30 years and purchased a memory foam bed a year ago and it has been a nightmare...too hot...sore joints, you name it...not for me and my wife. We decided to go back to a water bed and this one really appealed to us because of it being a softside and was similar to a regular mattress. We love it so far...no overheating like the memory foam...my joints are already feeling better and also sleeping better. We are also using another mattress cover on top of the pillow top that came with the bed. This is a slip on/over type cover that is all cotton...also to keep things natural. It has a secondary benefit of protecting the zip on pillow top cover that comes with the bed....so, the worry about having to take it off and wash it is greatly reduced. The secondary mattress topper/cover we bought is also providing a little more loft for comfort. The only negative we have with the entire bed is that the zip on mattress cover you're asking about is claimed to be all natural cotton...I think the cotton is stuffed with some kind of man made fiber. The reason I believe this is that there is a smell for the first several weeks that starts to diminish with time...I believe it to be some off-gassing of the fiber in the pockets of the cover...probably some kind of polyester. If you have the time when you get the bed...before you sleep on it...I would try and hang that zip off mattress cover outside every day for a week and really get it aired out in the wind and sun...I think that would improve your initial comfort level dramatically. We did not have the time or place to do that...and just put up with it for a while. The bed is comfortable and the guy who calls you up from the company that sells it is very knowledgeable and friendly. He really knows his stuff and I was impressed. I would buy it again...I'll never own another memory foam bed... Water Beds for me and my wife! A foundation looks just like a box spring but it is made out of wood. It has no spring inside. Normally when buying pretty much any quality mattress and box you can upgrade the box spring to a foundation or it may already come with one. Check to see if it has a spring in it. Just put some presure on it to see if it has a spring in it. If it does then you should also order a foundation.
