## Overview

The HiLetgo RFID Kit features the Philips MFRC522 chip operating at 13.56MHz, delivering fast, secure, and reliable contactless communication. Designed for low power consumption and easy SPI interface integration, it supports multiple MIFARE card types and is perfect for DIY projects, smart meters, and portable devices. Compact and durable, this kit empowers developers to build custom RFID solutions with confidence.

## Description

RC522 chip 1. MFRC522 is a highly integrated read and write chip which is applicable to 13.56MHz contactless communications. 2. It is a non-contact read and writer card chip, low voltage, low cost and small size, is a better choice for smart meters and portable handheld devices development. 3. MF RC522 completely integrated in all types of 13.56MHz passive contactless communication methods and protocols. 4. Support 14443A compatible transponder signals. The digital part handles ISO14443A framing and error detection. In addition, support fast CRYPTO1 encryption algorithms, terminology validation MIFARE products. 5. MFRC522 support MIFARE series of high-speed non-contact communication, two-way data transmission rate up to 424kbit/s. 6. As a highly integrated 13.56MHz card reader new family of chips, there are many similarities between MF RC522, MF RC500 and MF RC530, but also have many differences. Communication between it and the host SPI mode helps to reduce the connection, reduce PCB board size and cost. Electrical parameters: Operating current :13-26mA/DC 3.3V Idle current :10-13mA/DC 3.3V Sleep current: <80uA Peak current: <30mA Operating Frequency: 13.56MHz Supported card types: mifare1 S50, mifare1 S70 MIFARE Ultralight, mifare Pro, MIFARE DESFire Product physical characteristics: size: 40mm×60mm Environmental Operating temperature: -20-80 degrees Celsius Environmental Storage Temperature: -40-85 degrees Celsius Relative humidity: relative humidity 5% -95% Package Included: 1 *RFID Kit

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does it write cards?**
A: Sure does

**Q: Can you tell me its range? I want to detect my cat's microchip from several inches away, through his skin and fur.**
A: After setting the module to max range, the best I can get is a half inch range.
Also, animal microchips operate on a different frequency (~130kHz) than standard NFC 13.56MHz).

**Q: Does the rfid-rc522 come with the header pins already soldered?**
A: No. It comes with 2 types of pins; straight and L shaped so you can fit it to any project. But you’ll have to solder the ones that fit to the board

**Q: what type of cards should i buy if i want more**
A: the question you ask really makes me stop and think. I believe you are asking about the operating frequency of the card. It needs to have an Operating Frequency 13.56MHz. Many of the ones I see offered from Amazon state that they operate at
125 KHz. I would not buy those. I would buy one that specifies the 13.56 MHz frequency. I prefer the dog tag type over the card type, but that would just be personal preference. I hope my answer is helpful.

*by A***Z on April 12, 2026*

Very cheap and widely available ✔️ Good compatibility with Arduino libraries (like MFRC522) ✔️ Comes with card + key fob included for testing ✔️ Works well for learning and prototyping ✔️ Good documentation and community support

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great with MicroPython and Raspberry Pi Pico W
*by O***R on August 9, 2023*

Once I got the driver mfrc522.py and some sample code this worked right out of the box. While the board supports SPI and i2c, the driver has only SPI Init in it leaving adding i2c support to adventurous developers. I’m using this as a key to start my DIY electric scooter bike. I will likely buy another - can’t beat the price!
