**Q: what are  the benefits of akaline water?**
A: People here will ramble on about anti-cancer effects and other nonsense. The pH of your body is tightly regulated between a small range of 7.35-7.45. The proteins that your body manufactures will denature when not in this range, and thus not work. Metabolic acidosis (aka serum/blood becoming too acidic) will start to become incompatible with life at ranges of a pH of 7.0ish. Same thing with severe metabolic alkalosis at around a pH of 7.6ish. 

So what is alkaline water good for? Well recreational athletes will use it to alleviate muscle cramps during prolonged exercise. Typically they will add baking soda (sodium bicarb) to their water at a rate of 0.3g per kg body weight. Quickly after muscles begin working they deplete their sugar stores and rely on non-oxygen based methods for energy production. A byproduct of this anerobic respiration is called lactate (lactic acid). Your body uses an alkaline substance called bicarbonate to buffer (balance) the newly produced lactate to keep your pH in that tight zone. By drinking baking soda you are providing extra available bicarbonate which can buffer those acids in the muscles and reduce inflammation.
