Try simmering 8 nuts in 1 quart of water for two hours, strain, and use the liquid. I use 1/4 to 1/3 cup in my high-efficiency washer and my clothes come out smelling clean and fresh. Store the liquid in a jar in the refrigerator. **Q: How do you know when the nuts are ready to be tossed and new ones used? Also, mine are not creating suds, are they supposed to? Thanks!** A: I toss mine after 5-7 uses, depending on how dirty and/or large the loads were. I've read that some people toss them when they get squishy and/grayish, but I rarely see mine get to that point, even after 8-10 washes.Mine rarely create suds, there may be a few bubbles that pop quickly but I've never had the same suds as the chemical/commercial brands. That being said, I feel like the nuts always have my clothes clean and fresh. It is an adjustment to seeing no "evidence" of cleaning agents but they really do work! **Q: Do they work with an HE washer?** A: Absolutely, that is what I have. I have been using them since March 2015. I boil mine and then make them into pre measured ice cubes. There are directions for doing this method online and sometimes you can get it in the packaging from whichever company you get your soap berries from. I like the NatruOil, they have worked out very well for me. **Q: Has anyone tried using the soap nuts for cleaning your hair?** A: I use these soap nuts less for laundry now and more for hair and bodywash. I make a super concentrated version, taking 16 nuts and boiling them in 6 cups of water. Boil for 20 minutes, add another cup of water and boil for 10 minutes, and one last cup of water and boil for an additional 10. Mix 1 tablespoon citric acid to help preserve. I place in a hair dye squeeze bottle with room for air so I can shake it up into a lather. I work the lather into my roots before I get in the shower. Let sit for 5 minutes, then rinse with water, really massaging your scalp as you rinse it out. Finish with a diluted cup of vinegar 1/4 cup to a cup of water as a final rinse. I have long hair and I wash only when my roots are oily (usually every 3 days). No poo has never worked for me but this method finally does! Very pleased with the results. I did get about six loads with an HE washer off a bag with about 6 nuts in it. The laundry comes out clean. Nothing spectacular in the scent - it really doesn't leave one behind (which is really good for my husband, who is a law enforcement officer working at a state prison - max security - and doesn't want to go to work smelling like a flower). And the clothes weren't particularly soft or anything, but they were definitely clean, and that's what I'm using my washing machine for in the first place. The fact that it's easy on the environment, all natural, etc - certainly makes it worth my while & a great value, too. And it definitely DOES WASH your clothes - they DO GET very clean. I am probably going to get some of those wool-dryer balls soon, and maybe add some scented oil b/c I DO happen to like clothes that smell good. The one thing I wanted to note in particular was the 18x cleaning solution that comes along with this. WOW. What a great cleanser for all surfaces, etc. Even OK to use on fabrics & furniture, carpets, sinks, cabinets, countertops, etc. It might not be the best thing for glass, although it does my glass-top stove just fine. I added 1TBSP of the 18X to an old Windex squirt bottle, filled it the rest of the way up with FILTERED WATER - with a ZERO filter, the best kind you can get! And then I added a special mix of Essential Oils. It's not enough to make the cleanser greasy, or cause it to leave stains or smears or residue, but it is enough to leave a wonderful scent throughout my house whenever I use the cleanser. I added about 15-20 drops each of Essential Lane Oils (which I purchased from eBay last year): Lemon Lemongrass (a bit sweeter than regular lemon - i often use BOTH) Peppermint AND Yarrow (this one was Aroma Eden brand - but when using Yarrow, just be sure you use a brand where the Yarrow Oil itself has a slight blue tint - that's how you know it's real Yarrow Oil & not a synthetic copy).
