It is true that the stiffener is plastic rather than steel, but they seem strong enough to keep my wrists in 1 piece. (I did break a bone in my wrist 5 years ago when I fell and did not have these on! On that one day I had decided I didn't need them. Da!)). Anyway, what wears out is the elastic velcro straps. Over time they stretch until they become too long to keep the guards snug. That takes a few years to happen though and I use them about 3 times per week. My only caution is sizing. My wrists are 6.5" in circumference and I wear a size medium. When I first put these new guards on, I thought they were a bit too small - the velcro straps were just long enough to reach around and secure.
